Holder isn’t to blame for his enemies’ irrationality

Justice HolderI’m going to miss Eric Holder as attorney general, and the over-the-top, “ding-dong-the-wicked-witch-is-dead!!”-type celebrations that you’re now seeing on the right are a big part of the reason.

No, Holder wasn’t perfect in the role. No one is. Yes, a lot of anger and worse was aimed in his direction.

But let’s be honest. Nothing Holder said or did came close to justifying the disproportionate scale of vitriol against him. The free-floating paranoia that has come to define modern conservatism, and that for a variety of reasons focused on Holder as its target, existed long before he was appointed attorney general, and it will continue unabated after he is gone. Blaming him for creating it would be like blaming a lightning rod for creating lightning.

To cite just one example from earlier today:

“He ran the Department of Justice much like the Black Panthers would….”

The fact that Holder publicly dismissed such paranoia for what it was and — in appearances before Congress and elsewhere — seemed downright bemused by the operatic hatred directed his way only made his detractors sputter in frustration. How dare he not admit that he was trying to undermine the Constitution! How dare he not cower before our wrath!! (Darrell Issa proved a particularly hapless antagonist, always promising a huge revelation of Holder’s corruption, never once delivering.)

Holder has already served longer as AG than all but three of his predecessors in this nation’s long history, and by the time he actually leaves he will probably have been in office for six years. He leaves on his own terms, on his own schedule, and personally, I’d like to thank him for his years of service to our country.

Other countries of the world were and are watching. They see how "democracy" as practiced by the Americans leaves a lot to be desired. Fox News goes from the sublime to the ridiculous and has no sense of shame or decency.

How many of Jay's commentaries have circled around the word "blame"?

Holder was treated no different that John Ashcroft...or perhaps someone can explain the difference.

That job is possibly worst one in DC

"Nothing Holder said or did came close to justifying the disproportionate scale of vitriol against him." Dead wrong, mr bookman. The fact that he is one of the longest-serving AG's is not due to any virtue on his part. The man is an oft-proven racist and downright criminal.

If you oppose the liberal view, you are irrational.  Cozy little rationale.

People that watch Fox "News" are known to get even more ignorant than they were to begin with.

Ralph43,

Most of those Fox women have law degrees.  As to their miniskirts, more power to them.  Never saw an underwear problem..... I watch them a lot.  Some of the most articulate, well informed ladies on the planet.  Sure beats the hell out of Charlie Rose and Matt Lauer.  How you get your news is your problem, however, killing the messenger won't cut it.

Why is Michael Brown's killer still walking around uncharged in Ferguson, MO?

You'd think a "race baiting" AG like Eric Holder would have made a big issue about it and gotten things moving in that direction were he really such a radical obsessed with race-based retaliation no?

Watch Jay's Fox News 'discussion' of Eric Holder.  Young attractive women, miniskirts with an occasional flash of underwear, droning on about a subject they obviously know nothing about.  Laughable.  A Saturday Night Live sketch which must include the obese, aging, salivating incontinent white males (see bloggers below) huddled close to the T.V. absorbing this 'information', tongues out.  No wonder the Republicans were panicked that Holder would find ways to enforce the Voting Rights Act.  Now, we must deal with the state attempts to suppress voting - Andrew Feller has a very nice review, in today's AJC, of the obstacles our Secretary of State, Brian Kemp, is throwing up.  Worse than the poll tax and literacy tests the neo-Confederates used in the past.  Have we become Syria - corrupt elections, guns everywhere, savage bigotry, lack of education, lack of employment?  Not quite, but pecking down the line.

@kayaker71  Glad to see real respect for a law degree.  :D

A little concerned that you were apparently worried so much about underwear that you focused on it.... but  I guess it does make the lies easier to swallow when a pretty woman says it.  Now why is it you don't demand the same respect for Sandra Fluke (who also has a law degree), H. Clinton (also a law degree), and so many others.  Maybe you are just too dazzled by the smiles?

Well if Fox is the source that drives you to make the outlandish assertions that you make then you might want to find another source.

Probably because he doesn't have any evidence to indict but he wants to keep that hushed up until after the mid-term, so it won't impede the DNC's efforts to get their base to the polls.

Ok, here in Georgia, trying to keep minority voter registration groups from succeeding in getting people registered to vote even though that is their right as citizens. Psst...it isn't the registration group's responsibility to verify voter registration. It is the Registrar of Voters. There are always going to be questionable voter applications even if you register a group of white people.

@kayaker71 @Ralph-43 ...here's one:

"

In 2004, Ohio had the longest lines in the country on Election Day, with some voters — particularly in large urban areas — waiting as long as seven hours to vote. A DNC survey estimated that 174,000 Ohioans — 3 percent of the state’s electorate – left without voting. George W. Bush won the state by just 118,000 votes.

In response to the long lines, Ohio adopted 35 days of early voting in 2008, including on nights and weekends, to make voting more convenient. But following the large Democratic turnout in 2008, Ohio Republicans drastically curtailed early voting in 2012 from 35 to 11 days, with no voting on the Sunday before the election, when African-American churches historically rally their congregants to go to the polls. Voting rights activists subsequently gathered enough signatures to block the new voting restrictions and force a referendum on Election Day. In reaction, Ohio Republicans repealed their own bill in the state legislature, but kept a ban on early voting three days before Election Day (when 98,000 Ohioans voted in 2008), adding an exception for active duty members of the military, who tend to lean Republican.

These cuts disproportionately impacted black voters, who made up a majority of early voters in large urban areas like Cleveland’s Cuyahoga County and Dayton’s Montgomery County in 2008. Ohio Republicans brazenly tried to cut early voting hours in Democratic counties while expanding them in Republican ones. GOP leaders admitted the cuts in Democratic counties were motivated by racial politics. “I guess I really actually feel we shouldn’t contort the voting process to accommodate the urban — read African-American — voter-turnout machine,” said Doug Preisse, the GOP chair in Columbus’s Franklin County."

@kayaker71 @Ralph-43 -  Try FAUX outrage about voter registration forms being "forged" in Georgia.

Voter Registration FORMS are NOT votes and a form signed by Donald Duck does not mean that Donald Duck will show up to vote.  As the republicans know.

If they disallow 85K registrations to pass because TWENTY FIVE are false, then that is a supreme example of how the GOP in georgia is suppressing votes comrade.

@LeninTime  You've certainly become more hostile is it due to the rejection that you mostly receive on Jay's blog?

HDB0329
HDB0329

@kayaker71 @Ralph-43 ...here's another:

"Now, harking back to the days of Jim Crow, they are at it again. In Arizona and Kansas, GOP officials are moving to adopt a two-tiered voting system, the effect of which would be to disenfranchise thousands of voters. The ploy relies on requiring birth certificates, passports and other documents that establish proof of citizenship in order to register to vote in state and local elections. Such documents are not necessary to register for federal elections.

Many voters cannot easily produce such documents; fewer than half of Kansans and Arizonans possess a passport, and it’s a safe bet that many of them don’t have a birth certificate readily at hand either. That means that voter registration drives in gubernatorial, legislative and local county races, which, in the case of Democratic candidates, often target minority and poor neighborhoods, are likely to yield fewer new voters. The results are whiter and richer voters. That’s electoral gold for Republicans."

@kayaker71 @Ralph-43 ....and for Georgia:

"Rev. Raphael Warnock of Ebenezer Baptist Church, who also helps lead NGP, and Francys Johnson of the NAACP's Georgia chapter joined Abrams to blast Kemp's voter fraud allegations. Johnson said that Kemp's latest probe was "par for the course" given his past efforts to stop potential minority voters. In particular, he criticized the secretary of state for launching an unsuccessful voter registration fraud investigation in 2010; forcing the NAACP to file a federal lawsuit to ensure compliance with the National Voter Registration Act in 2011; and purging thousands of residents from the voter rolls in an "error-ridden" 2012 election.

Warnock, who said the voter fraud investigation was an attempt to distract voters, accused Kemp of preventing thousands of minority men and women from registering — and casting ballots in the statewide primary that occurred on May 20. He urged Georgia residents to not be intimidated by Kemp's efforts to obstruct further outreach efforts. The chance to vote on Sundays, he added, shouldn't be a partisan debate."
