Georgia a key weapons supplier to nation’s criminals

Tories claim huge rise in gun crime under LabourLike its owner, the weapon used to kill two New York City police officers has Georgia connections. According to the New York Times, the Taurus pistol’s last public sale occurred at Arrowhead Pawn Shop in Jonesboro, although that was back in 1996. Authorities are still trying to trace how it ended up 18 years later in the hands of Ismaaiyl Brinsley, a convicted felon with a history of mental illness.

Arrowhead Pawn Shop, however, has a story of its own:

“Although Arrowhead is nearly 900 miles away, New York police officials are familiar with the store … As recently as 2010, Arrowhead was the leading out-of-state source of guns recovered in crimes by the New York Police Department, according to an article in The Daily News. Georgia is also part of the “Iron Pipeline,” a chain of Southern states with looser gun laws that is responsible for sending a steady stream of firearms into New York and other Northern cities, where there are many more restrictions on who can purchase a gun….

Information in the federal database on which gun dealers turn up most frequently in these traces is closely protected, as a result of legislation passed in 2003. But The Washington Post obtained four years’ worth of trace data in 2010 and found Arrowhead was the fifth-largest source of crime traces in the country.”

The fact that such data are treated as a national secret tells you a lot about how seriously we take such issues.

And apparently, the “Iron Pipeline” takes a variety of forms. As the AJC has reported, federal officials have arrested two men this month — one a Delta baggage handler, another a former Hartsfield employee — and charged them with smuggling dozens of firearms, some of them loaded, on board flights between Atlanta and New York.

According to documents filed in federal court, the two men have smuggled 129 firearms, including two assault weapons, from Georgia to New York since May. The baggage handler allegedly used his employee badge to carry the guns undetected into the secure area of the airport, then handed them off to an accomplice with a ticket to New York.

That’s disturbing for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is the ease with which contraband made its way onto an aircraft. Security experts say the lack of screening of airport employees has been a well-known weakness at airports all over the country. The AJC story recounts a long list of such incidents, and by definition those are the ones that we’ve learned about. They no doubt represent only a small fraction of the illegal, deadly traffic.

Jay, don't forget the largest supplier of illegal, I am sorry, undocumented guns is the Federal Government giving more than 2000 guns to Mexican Drug Cartels.  How many have been killed with those guns?  You will never know because the Obama Administration refused to turn over documents relating to this non scandal.  LOL

@Brosephus

Fortune Magazine is your source.  ROFLMAO.  Fortune is owned by Time Warner, which is the epitome of political correctness, Cultural Marxism.

America probably would have never heard of this failed ATF operation if not for the fact that a US Border Agent was killed in a firefight with drug smugglers who used one of these guns.  Think about the logic here - the US/Mexico border is wide open, we cannot account for TENS of MILLIONS of ILLEGAL ALIENS waltzing across the border, BILLIONS of DOLLARS worth of ILLEGAL DRUGS smuggled across the border, but we're going to track 2000 guns with SEVEN ATF agents.

Attorney General Holder was held in contempt of Congress due to this fiasco and Obama exercised Executive Privilege to keep from talking about his role.

@Aztec  LOL!!!

http://fortune.com/2012/06/27/the-truth-about-the-fast-and-furious-scandal/

A Fortune investigation reveals that the ATF never intentionally allowed guns to fall into the hands of Mexican drug cartels. How the world came to believe just the opposite is a tale of rivalry, murder, and political bloodlust.

That lie is like the Jason Voorhees of lies.  No matter how many times it gets knocked down, some errant lightning strike seems to bring it back from the dead.

@ThulsaDoom  "I better start serving my 3 day suspension. Kinda weird. It happens just as I'm about to leave town for Christmas vacation for 3 to 5 days and I won't even be on the computer."

Let's see, yet ANOTHER black with a gun commits murder.  Bookboy's response, let's highlight the tool used by the black to commit said murder and ignore the fact that although blacks comprise only 12% of the population, are responsible for more than 50% of the murders.

In fact, in every violent crime category, the black crime rate is EXPONENTIALLY higher than the other races.

Can't talk about the BLACK VIOLENT CRIME RATE, though.  To do so would by rayyyyccciiiissst.

Speaking of black crime, I see in Dayton Ohio, black sixteen year old Jawaad Jabbaar was mad because he missed out on the sale of $200+ Air Jordan tennis shoes, so he waits outside the mall and tries to rob another shopper who just bought the shoes.  Luckily, the other shopper was carrying and was able to protect himself from little thug Jabbaar.  Little thug Jabbaar is now six feet under, where he belongs.

"In fact, in every violent crime category, the black crime rate is EXPONENTIALLY higher than the other races."

When you have to lie to make a point, then you don't have a point to make.  Given that this is the number of arrests based on crimes, seems like that EXPONENTIALLY doesn't hold up for every violent crime category.  Unless, you actually know that more Black people are getting away with violent crimes and not being arrested.

http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2013/crime-in-the-u.s.-2013/tables/table-43

The only two categories where Black arrests are higher than White's is in murder and robbery where the rates are 45.3 to 52.2 and 41.9 to 56.4 respectively.  The other categories show that Whites are arrested more for those crimes, many of them with more than 60% of the arrests.

Lee_CPA2
Lee_CPA2

@Brosephus

And the problem with your data is that Mestizo hispanics, who are responsible for a significant percentage of violent crime, are included in the White crime rate.  Additionally, the data you referenced does not give CRIME RATE, which is the proportional distribution based on population.

You should have used the name Atlanta Metro area instead of Georgia in your title for this column. Firearms are not that easy to get in the smaller rural towns.

So the solution to gun violence in other states is to liberalize those states gun laws to match Ga's?

With the rash of recently reported fiction stories by the liberal media, including today's Huffington Post, I have to wonder if there is any truth to the "facts" in this story.  This story reports a supposedly well know problem allegedly known to all who can do something about it   but unbelievably have not.  Is this just another example of the media twisting the truth to support their pre-determined conclusion? Come on Jay, secret four year old statistics?  Seriously, it sounds like another Obama plot fast and furious op designed to restrict our second amendment rights.

Does Sheriff Victor Hill know? Clayton County's police chief? Clayton County's Board of Commissioners?

He probably could have bought a hatchet/ax at Southlake Mall Sears.

@Surelyyoujest  Guns have not been outlawed.  In fact, guns are 'everywhere'.  That's the problem.

quaterhorselady

@Surelyyoujest @Ralph-43 The outlaw had the gun from Georgia - the bought and paid for by the NRA and Georgiacarry Guns Everywhere Law (HB60).  Read the whole article.

Well the new motto of the NRA is "use it or lose it". So Arrowhead is trying to do its part.

Just my opinion but I highly doubt Jay calls out someone without any verification of the complaint nor do I think the person called out would ignore Jay if his side of the story checked out as it was being "used car" sold.

Is the lemon law still in effect in GA?

Either way.......

Okay, AJC, do you want to continue to champion all liberal causes, like gun control, illegal same sex marriage, and legalized pot?  Or had you rather sell newspapers and get your balance sheet into the black?  It is your choice.

Ralph-45
Ralph-45

@ChuckAllison  I think we have recently learned that Americans do not like being censored and the AJC has generally published accurate information.  The Grady/Blue Cross story is a major exception written by a right winger with clear political bias.  Maybe you should read that (over and over).  Gun shootings are gun shootings - why withhold the information?  The 'Guns Everywhere' law has clearly escalated random violence and shootings.  I guess the Bad Deal is very proud of himself and plans on bigger bribes from the Gun Dealers, NRA, Blue Cross, and United Health Care.

Folks, I'm out.  Everyone, please be careful behind the wheel, even if you're just going a short distance.  As I said earlier, my wife and I have been together 20 years as of next week, but 20 years ago *last* week, I had my car totaled out from under me by a drunk driver.  Fortunately, I was driving a big old Caprice Classic and was wearing my seat belt (so I just caught a hella bruising and was sore for about a week), but the other guy took a header through his windshield.

Drive carefully and within posted speed limits.  It would be better to be an hour late than to spend your holiday in the ER.

Peace out.

@gotalife @Doggone_GA @Tuna Meowt To be replaced by new bugs.  Can you tell I'm not necessarily a huge fan of new technology?  Heck, I only got my first smart phone THIS year!  In general I'm a proponent of "it's better to have the best of old technology than the beginning of new technology"

gotalife
gotalife

@Doggone_GA @gotalife @Tuna Meowt I love new technology because I worked in the field. It depends on investments and when big investors invest, technology changes rapidly. Too fast for most Americans. Google is looking for car manufacture partners because the technology is ready to start.

@gotalife @Doggone_GA @Tuna Meowt Yeah, I think it's coming...but I don't think it's going to be a really big thing for a long time yet.  Too many "old tech" cares on the road...heck, I'm still driving my 20 year old van!
