GOP’s immigration ‘reform’ likely to target ‘dreamers’

Immigration Dream Act RecordsNext week, House Republicans will use a must-pass Homeland Security appropriations bill to attempt to undo the executive order on immigration that President Obama issued in November. But things being what they are, they won’t stop there.

Instead, the bill is also likely to challenge an earlier Obama executive order regarding those who were brought here illegally as young children. It would strip those so-called “dreamers” — many of whom think of themselves as American and know no home but this one — of any legal protection against being deported.

Poll after poll has shown strong public support for finding some way to extend legal status to those here illegally. In a Fox News poll a year ago, for example, 68 percent of Americans said they want to create a pathway to citizenship, while just 15 percent wanted to try to solve the problem through mass deportation.

When the topic is the dreamers, public opinion is even more heavily tilted. Back in 2012, when Obama first announced his executive order, National Journal did a poll asking Americans what approach they preferred:

dreamerJust 14 percent of Republicans — yes, Republicans — said they support the approach that their party leaders will attempt to force into law next week. Seventy-nine percent of Republicans supported some means of allowing them to stay legally.

Yet that’s the ground on which the GOP will apparently choose to fight. It’s just crazy.

From that 2007 piece I linked earlier:

The idea that Europe is being "taken over" by Muslims is the unifying theme of this cruise. Some people go on singles cruises. Some go on ballroom dancing cruises. This is the "The Muslims Are Coming" cruise - drinks included. Because everyone thinks it. Everyone knows it. Everyone dreams it. And the man responsible is sitting only a few tables down: Mark Steyn. [...]

Steyn's thesis in his new book, America Alone, is simple: The "European races" i.e., white people - "are too self-absorbed to breed," but the Muslims are multiplying quickly. The inevitable result will be " large-scale evacuation operations circa 2015" as Europe is ceded to al Qaeda and "Greater France remorselessly evolve[s] into Greater Bosnia."

He offers a light smearing of dubious demographic figures - he needs to turn 20 million European Muslims into more than 150 million in nine years, which is a lot of humping.

But facts, figures, and doubt are not on the itinerary of this cruise. With one or two exceptions, the passengers discuss "the Muslims" as a homogenous, sharia-seeking block - already with near-total control of Europe. Over the week, I am asked nine times - I counted - when I am fleeing Europe's encroaching Muslim population for the safety of the United States of America.

the safety of the United States of America.

Oh, and once again, a reminder--the US murder rate is about four times higher than that of France's.

It appears that bad police do get what they deserve just like good police do not get prosecuted.

"VICTORIA, Texas –  The lawyer for a Texas police officer fired for using a stun gun on a 76-year-old man during a traffic stop says there was "nothing unreasonable" about that level of force.

Former Victoria police officer Nathanial Robinson plans to appeal his termination with the city. His attorney, Greg Cagle, told the Victoria Advocate in a story published Sunday (http://bit.ly/1FHB3AP ) that Robinson acted constitutionally within the law.

Dashboard camera video from Dec. 11 captured the initial struggle between Robinson and Pete Vasquez, who was pulled over for an expired vehicle inspection sticker.

Cagle says the video doesn't show Vasquez kicking the officer. He says Vasquez "scratched his elbow and hurt his feelings" but had no injuries.

Prosecutors are now reviewing the results of a criminal investigation into the traffic stop."

Normd paid your "fair share" of national defense by serving our country in Vietnam. The injuries he sustained and the mental and emotional hardships he endured can't be put into terms of dollars and cents, but trust me, you owe him big time.

hey--if y'all want a larf, go to news.google.com and enter "no go zone" in the search field.

Nothing but crackpot/racist nonsense returned.

I dunno, the "no go zones" simply sound like ethnic neighborhoods to me...New York is full of them, and so is Chicago...

I'd heard some of this silliness in the past, but the racist right wing sites have really stepped up the hysteria hoping to capitalize on the Paris massacre.

Such a classy bunch.

@OriginalProf @stands_for_decibels

Well the term "no go zone" itself is pretty fluid--it can mean whatever one wishes it to mean, I guess.

But in the hands of the racist pigs trolling here, it has come to mean that vast swaths of territory in France and the UK have been surrendered by the government to -- try to follow me here -- some unnamed Muslim organization (I guess we should just flip a coin to see if it's Shia or Sunni?).

If you look back on the Interwebs you'll see this latter day "Elders of Zion" -type garbage has been around for the better part of a decade.

The professor proving his rational is not how the education works. When you have proven your metal and have done more and seen more than the student then it is the student that has the burden of proof.  It is the professor that makes the claim (and there is no doubt WGA is the professor) and it is up to the lazy student to disprove his claim with fact based research that makes a undisputed case.

I know all you little young brats want to party and not be challenged intellectually because you already think you know everything but you are not even close to becoming fully maturated.

I'd go through and point out the grammatical errors, but I have more important things to do.  Like trimming my ear hair, which becomes such a problem as you age.

Let alone your failure to understand higher education.

Any professor who tosses out controversial information, but can only back it up with wingnut websites, wouldn't last long.

@CherokeeCounty Yes, in the world of the progressive, grammar and not content is the thing that separates intelligence.

I wonder if this is the reason Democrats are getting killed at the ballot box in Cherokee county and across the state of Georgia?

If this is the first you have heard of this, I'm not surprised. France doesn't want you to know that Paris has been divided into religious-law microstates. Other people might sniff that France's Muslim population is among the least religious in Europe and that a bigger danger may be to devout French Muslims (or anyone else) who accidentally wanders into particularly redneck portions of the city, but it sounds much more terrifying to contemplate the notion of Sharia microstates where the laws of France no longer apply, so by God that's what we'll be doing.

It's amazing the American liberal left is so out of touch with their own country and world events. I was shocked when stands as an example was critical of Scout pointing out the no go zones in France. No go zones exist throughout Europe as well as in Great Brittan. Shocking that he was unaware of this fact.
