White House, Netanyahu now dueling via bomb drawings

As you may recall, this is Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the United Nations on Sept. 12, 2002, using a drawing of a bomb to demonstrate how close he believed Iran to be to a nuclear weapon:

imrs-3

Below is the Netanyahu-inspired graphic released today by the White House, explaining the impact of the preliminary agreement with Iran.

irandeal

As a condition of the negotiations begun in 2013, Iran had already destroyed its entire stockpile of highly enriched uranium. Under the preliminary agreement, Iran would cease production of highly enriched uranium, reduce the number of centrifuges it is using by two-thirds, allow for intrusive inspections, reduce its stockpile of low-enriched uranium from 10,000 kilograms to 300 kilograms and cap its production of low-enriched uranium, among other steps. But if we reject the deal, none of that happens.

The dueling charts also raise an interesting question. In his 2012 speech, Netanyahu claimed that Iran was hell-bent on acquring a nuclear weapon, and was basically a year away from completing one.

“By next spring (of 2013), at most by next summer at current enrichment rates, they will have finished the medium enrichment and move on to the final stage. From there, it’s only a few months, possibly a few weeks before they get enough enriched uranium for the first bomb.”

A year came and went, the fall of 2013 arrived, yet Iran did not produce the bomb.

Instead, as I noted above, Iran agreed in November 2013 to destroy its stockpile of highly enriched uranium, a process completed under international inspection by July of 2014. If Iran were truly committed to acquiring a bomb, if it was truly just two or three months from that goal, why would it have taken all these steps that have set it backward? Why would it agree to destroy the highly enriched uranium that it had taken years to stockpile?

What in the name of Kermit the Frog is going on with this site? Is Kermit the Frog actually in charge?

In the dead-time interim whatever, I'll ask an I.T. question - is there a way to post a pic on here that I, maybe, took from my iPhone? Gimme a break mon, I just learned what 'tetrad of specific behaviors' meant yesterday, rolling shawnee eyes & everything.

@St_Simons_he-ne-ha I've never been on a blog that would do that.  it's pretty much a given that it has to be on the web somewhere and then you can post it using the link.

Tuna set me straight down below.  The "Radioactive Boy Scout" was who I was thinking(?) of.  Thanks again, Tuna!

@Normd You betcha, Normd.

That guy was a FREAK.  Did you see the pictures of his face?

Seems to me like there's an opening here for someone to make a LOT of money.  All that is needed is to come up with a safe way to dispose of technology's waste products: nuclear waste, geothermal waste water, desalinization waste water, fracking waste liquid.

Could be a fortune in it!

Atlanta, I love yer kids - but when will spring break be over?

And the next post will tell us that we should believe the Oblunder administration job numbers, revised or otherwise.  You did notice that things aren't going so well economically speaking, right?

@heezback And we really didn't land on the moon back in the 1960's and early 1970's.  It was all faked using TV technology that NASA invented.

So let me get this straight...Iran does not desire to possess nuclear weapon capability?  Is that what you believe, Jay?   Are you saying that you are willing to simply take Iran at its word and let that be enough?  Their stated objectives leave one to wonder how they will wipe Israel off the map without the bomb.  Perhaps you think they will do that by overflying on a magic carpet and dropping unicorn turds on them.

Your linked article contained the following:

"...The six world powers involved in the talks - the US, France, China, Russia, Germany and the UK - suspect Iran seeks atomic weapons, which Iran denies...."

@heezback Iran had two objectives in this negotiation. 1. get the sanctions lifted, 2. Maintain the ability to move forward with their nuclear weapons program. They got both.

@Doggone_GA @heezback The point is that Jay suggests they don't want the bomb; not that some foolish acting negotiators are trying to sell the notion that "inspections" are the guarantee.  We are talking about Iran for goodness sake.  I think they have a clear record of saying one thing and doing whatever they want.

".Iran does not desire to possess nuclear weapon capability?  Is that what you believe, Jay?   Are you saying that you are willing to simply take Iran at its word and let that be enough?"

Are you saying you don't read and think about what a person has written before asking questions that have been repeatedly addressed?

@ByteMe

I think he may be referring to Osiris.  With no inspectors.  Not the satellite and other intel tools we have today.  Not a valid comparison.

@Paul42 @ByteMe Just trying to complement the silly notion that Jay foisted in asserting that Iran has no interest in attaining nuclear offensive weapons.

@InTheMiddle2 You gotta come up with facts to support your #2 instead of just your opinion based on thin air.

@InTheMiddle2 You're right, you're totally entitled to your unsupported nonsense.  No worries!

What part of that column gave you that idea?

Is it really so difficult to say "Oops, misread that.  Made a mistake.  Disregard that last thread"?

Or is making up stuff the only basis to support one's ideology par for the conservative course nowadays?  (That was a Masters  pun!  Get it?)

@heezback "Are you saying that you are willing to simply take Iran at its word and let that be enough"

What part of "inspections" did you not understand?

ByteMe
ByteMe

@InTheMiddle2 Quite well, actually.  The UN came back and said they didn't have nuclear weapons or functioning chemical weapons.  Turns out to be true on both counts.  What part of reality are you objecting to now?

Cupofjoe
Cupofjoe

All the conversation/debate/bs is a moot point.  The odds of Iran obtaining weapon based nukes and using them are unfortunately either 0 or 100%- there is no in between.

ByteMe
ByteMe

@Cupofjoe It's only 100% when they actually detonate one.  Until then, it's 0.  No reason to freak out about 0.

ByteMe
ByteMe

@InTheMiddle2 For whom exactly?  The whole point of MADD which worked so well with USSR was that we would have the capacity to make sure that any detonation would be swiftly responded to with a killer strike.  You don't think they know that?  Why do you think that all the bad apples with nukes haven't tried to detonate one on another country since we did it so long ago?

Tuna Meowt
Tuna Meowt

@ByteMe @InTheMiddle2 In this case, it's not even AMERICAN nukes the Iranians have to fear.  If Iran tries something with a nuke, Israel's got as many as *200* nuclear warheads ready to use.  So even if the US lets an Iranian nuke slip by, you can be sure the Israelis WON'T.

And Iran knows that.

@FIGMO2 I get uncomfortable when I see lawyers on TV, shilling their services to the sick and injured.  And with phone numbers like 1-800-HE-HIT-ME, well, it gives me the agita.

Can drive-thru attorneys be far behind?  Get a free divorce with every out-of-court injury settlement?

Tuna Meowt
Tuna Meowt

@Doggone_GA @Tuna Meowt @FIGMO2 Some months ago, my wife was trying to get me to start a Facebook page, and so she was trying to look up old friends and high school classmates of mine (in an effort, I suppose, to induce me to Book my Face).

I found an old college chum who's a smiling, besuited attorney in a neighboring state and who appears to have a lovely family.

And I found a guy who was a total d*ck to all and sundry back in high school, and who is ALSO a smiling besuited attorney in a neighboring state.

So it's not the career, I suppose, as much as it is the people that choose it.
