‘When the night has come, and the land is dark …’

“When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we’ll see
No, I won’t be afraid
Oh, I won’t be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me ….”

Night has fallen for the great Ben. E. King, who died earlier today at the age of 76.

Open question to MaryElizabeth Sings. If you could have one of the following speakers in you class to present to the students who would you prefer. A community activist to talk about inequality and injustice, or a multi millionaire to talk about how to become self reliant.

According to data compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau and Department of Education, Baltimore in Fiscal Year 2012 spent an average of $15,287 on each elementary and secondary school student, an investment that ranked Baltimore third, behind New York and Boston, on the list of top spenders among the country’s 100 largest school systems by enrollment. And yet recent studies have shown only 16 percent of Baltimore’s eighth graders score at or above grade level in reading, only 13 percent for math.

Maybe the democrats in 87% voting for obama Baltimore are stealing the money before it gets to the kids?

hillary clinton says "what?"

"Contrary to goals, ER visits rise under Obamacare"

People that receive government handouts don't like to wait for their turn to see a doctor? Not surprised.

So people receiving subsidies to purchase the still sky high health insurance premiums in this country (do the subsidies help them pay the huge deductibles on these plans?) and keeping private health insurance profits chugging along are receiving 'handouts' but not the doctors making double or so what they'd make if not for their protectionist rackets that block entry to the profession and inflate their wages?

I think that's what Bernie's bill was called, but it never got out of committee.

My bet is you left out the part of that where they have to WORK HARD for whatever they want to accomplish, MES.  That part of the equation seems to be lost on far too many liberal children these days.

@JamVet @fiftythreepercenter The only thing I ever accomplished doing nothing is exactly what I wanted, nothing. This usually happen once a weekend over a few beers and a cigar, or if I am in the mood Scotch.

I was working in Texas when the C session stuff was being talked.

A bunch of pseudo cowboys were standing in a group ranting about c session.

My buddy sez, " skydog is from Ga, he can tell you in 3 words why c session is a real bad idea."

3 words? I can`t think of them.

He sez, "William Tecumseh Sherman".

@fiftythreepercenter

major reason that hasn't happened is there simply aren't enough primary care physicians to handle all the newly insured patients, says ACEP President Mike Gerardi, an emergency physician in New Jersey.

You mean, there's more work to be done?

Shocker.

ER visits have risen every year for the past 30 years.

Shocker...

Hillary or Bernie or Liz will get it straightened out with Single Pay.

@Visual_Cortex @fiftythreepercenter I'm sorry, but are you saying the geniuses who wrote this plan, thinking of everything including taxing medical devices and healthcare plans rich people might purchase didn't think to do anything about the delivery system for the people they claimed to care about.

Seems like maybe they didn't actually care that much to me....

ah, the old "Obama and the DEMONCRAPZ didn't fix everything that stinks about Merica in the seven months they had a filibuster-proof majority in Congress" talking point.

(I kid! I know, that President Uppity can just Executive Order all the moneys he needs. Because he magically made five million "illegals" into legal citizens. Tell us about that again. It never gets old.)

Social action of a meaningful, impacting nature ended in America 35 years ago, with the election of Republican President Ronald Reagan......

to which Clinton and Obama did not have the authority, know how, and intelligence to overcome

I suppose will complete this moronic sentence.

The life of the progressive-  wait to be told what you should be upset about and yell at others to correct. (the life of the con-  skip the yelling part and incarcerate and/or bomb)

To "In the Middle" and to all readers who perceive of social change as he does:

"I'm very much 'in the present.'  Just look around you, with an open mind and with your eyes wide open. The tragedy in Baltimore is only one example that should motivate all of us to galvanize around helping the disenfranchised in America, once again. Learn from it."

InTheMiddle2
InTheMiddle2

@MaryElizabethSings Sorry, the "victim" generalization is not going to work. If you want to help the disenfranchised quit enabling poor behavior, quit telling these kids they dont have a chance, quit telling them to get help from the governmnet, quit telling them it is somebody else fault, quit telling them they are victims.

MaryElizabethSings

I never "told these kids they don't have a chance, never told them "they can get help from the government," never told them, "it is somebody else's fault," never told them, "they are victims."

In fact, I told all of my students that they could become and do whatever they wanted to be and accomplish. And, I gave them the skills to accomplish those goals.

You are living an unreal reality in your own mind by believing too much Rightwing propaganda.

@MaryElizabethSings @InTheMiddle2 I believe what works. I have created jobs, you have not, I have built opportunity, you have not, I have provided the means for indivuduals to have good lives, you have not. I know what it takes to succeed in a world where every day is a competition, you do not. If you want to succeed it is better to listen to someone that knows how to get it done as opposed to someone who does not.

In other words, in your opinion, business people are more important to America than are educators.  Alexander Hamilton might have agreed with you on that, but Thomas Jefferson would not have.  Your arrogance is showing.

Kamchak:

Blame it on Lord Of The Flies.

Did you even read the article? It was written by a journalist who grew up in Sandtown. He was reflecting on what was and what is.

What's missing, in his opinion? Jobs, fathers, and government resources for the youth of Baltimore.

Why you find his opinion and those facts a source of entertainment escapes me.

Kamchak

His opinion is just like The Lord of the Flies or is it The Lord Of The Rings? Oh, I know, his opinion is like Bronte's Wuthering Heights.

"[F]acts"?

Baltimore is not a uninhabited island with no authority.

An oppressive authority led to the incidents in Baltimore.

Perhaps the journalist should've referenced late eighteenth century France, instead.

In October 2010, Geller told The New York Times she was profoundly affected by the 9/11 attacks. After contributing essays to various websites that examined Muslim militancy, including Charles Johnson's Little Green Footballs, she launched her own website. She named her website "Atlas Shrugs" in honor of right-wing hero and self-described objectivist author Ayn Rand, a Geller idol whose 1957 novel Atlas Shrugged celebrates pure capitalism unrestrained by government regulation or social welfare measures. The unvarnished anti-Muslim stridency of Atlas Shrugs won followers; Geller republished the 2005 cartoons of Muhammad from the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten, for example, when most other media demurred.

Johnson, a moderate conservative, later broke sharply with Geller, calling her an anti-Muslim "hatemonger." After Geller, who is Jewish, posted a critique of the Islamic halal practice of slaughtering animals for food in September 2010, Johnson pointed out that kosher practice is almost identical and observed, "My GOD she is stupid."

[...]

In February 2012, she had to fight to get a spot at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington, D.C., presumably because she had become an embarrassment. Infuriated and defiant, she said that CPAC’s “puppet-master” leaders had “abandoned conservative principles,” while ignoring the threat posed by Islamic extremism. And in June, the Jewish Federation of Los Angeles, bowing to a growing chorus of criticism, canceled a planned lecture by Geller just hours before it was to be delivered. Geller reacted to this new slight by making references to the Holocaust: “Jewish leadership is on the trains and thinks we will go quietly.”
