Congress is great … at ducking issues, rendering itself irrelevant

ap_Congress_ac_130327_wblog-1

According to the Associated Press, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell “grudgingly” conceded this week that he and his fellow Republicans probably lack the votes needed to block the nuclear deal with Iran.

“I hope we can defeat it, but the procedure is obviously stacked in the president’s favor,” McConnell “grudgingly” said. “We’ll see.”

Well, “grudgingly” my rear end.

The majority leader is right, of course. He’s right that the deal will probably be approved, and he’s right that the procedure is obviously stacked in the president’s favor. As McConnell pointed out, under the law Obama “can win by getting one-third plus one of either house,” and the president will almost certainly clear that low bar. As a result, the deal should be accepted and implemented.

But let’s take a step back for a moment: Who put in place the congressional procedure that gives Obama such an obvious advantage? Who fixed the system so adroitly that Republicans in firm control of both the House and Senate are free to fulminate and fuss about the deal, playing to their base and depicting it as everything but an act of outright treachery, all while basically guaranteeing that the deal would be approved anyway?

Could it have been McConnell, House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Foreign Relations Chair Bob Corker, among others?

Yes, it could. McConnell sponsored the legislation that established this procedure, which passed in the Senate in May with just one vote (Barbara Boxer from California) cast in opposition. In the House, the law also passed overwhelmingly, with just 19 Republicans and six Democrats voting against it.

Convenient, no? Republicans and a few Democrats get the chance to vote against the bill, but without having to take responsibility for the chaotic aftermath if they actually succeeded in blocking it. And Obama lets them vent and posture, while knowing that the complaining is all sound and fury, signifying nothing. Win win!

Personally, the ease with which all this is going down leads me to question just how sincere many of the opponents are to the deal. If they honestly think that it’s as bad as they claim, why would they so willingly agree to a process so favorable to its implementation? (Reading Corker’s half-hearted “condemnation” of the deal in the Washington Post reinforces that suspicion.) It’s as if this is all some elaborate sleight of hand, designed so Republicans don’t have to admit to their base that the deal worked out by Obama is actually pretty good and ought to be given a try.
Certainly, it’s  a more elaborate and elegant means of ducking responsibility than Congress has managed with ISIS. We’ve been engaged in military action against that terrorist group for a year now, and in his State of the Union address in January, Obama asked Congress for a resolution formally allowing him to take that action. In February, he sent Congress a draft resolution and reiterated his plea for congressional backing.
It’s now August verging toward September, and Congress has done nothing and has no plans to do anything. No votes, no committee debates, no floor debates, nothing.  Once again, this time by inaction, they’ve created a situation that allows them to criticize Obama for what he’s doing or not doing, without actually having to go on record and make hard decisions themselves.
But I’m sure they’re doing that “grudgingly.”

Seems President Obama has a very intimate knowledge of international law that reflects a can do for positions that America should follow in a changing world order. No longer will America dictate, but continue to be "Global Partners" with an agreeable outcome. I am beginning to understand the awarding of the Nobel Peace Price, because they understood his capabilities in bringing this transformation to fruition. Let's hope this catches on with the GOP.

Cons have accomplished so much since they took over Congress--Let a foreign Leader  dictate  debate; interfere in foreign affairs, Kill a much needed five year road bill and funding; nonstop backstabbing and mud throwing;Daily  attempts to curtail women's reproductive rights and healthcare. Yes Cons sure know how to make the wheels of government  work properly.

I think the 'moms' are busy helping the children holding the majority of Congress.

Of course we have to remember, they didn't go to Washington in order to set about the hard work of running a Country, they just went to posture on Abortion, Tax Cuts for their donors, ever expanding and wasteful military and polluting the world into an uninhabitable place.

If you are going to pay for a pic you may as well just go to Scores and assist a few ladies who are working their way through school?

@St Simons he-ne-ha So the GOP has a clown car that holds 16 candidates each with ideas on what to do and the Democrats have a coronaion carriage that holds one candidate that has no new ideas and a lot of denial. Pick who you like.

Uh oh. I'm pretty sure I've seen polling that indicates Americans are more likely to vote for a paroled serial killer than such a religious adherent.

It's a shame the gop candidates you mention with ideas on what to do have been invisible.

All I have seen are the same set of fools babbling about tax cuts, interfering with the necessary work of Planned Parenthood, putting Americans in harm's way to protect israael, you know the standard wrong wing crap.

My solution to the immigrant problem is to go to Mexico and offer a 1000.00

payment to any Mexican National that can prove that they have been residing

in the US for 1 year or more. Issue a deportation order with the payment.

Sheriff Charles Pearson said the man dropped his gun and a bullet hit him in the arm. The sheriff did not identify the man or offer any other details about what happened.

The group of armed citizens and veterans is standing guard outside the Save Yourself Survival and Tactical Gear store after the owners said they received death threats from all over the world for putting up a sign saying Muslims weren't welcome.

"I saw several of those gentlemen out there yesterday," Pearson said. "The way they were holding their weapons, with the fingers on the triggers, you can tell a couple of these gentlemen have no idea about weapons safety. It's like the Clampetts have come to town," Sheriff Pearson told muskogeenow.com.
