Carly Fiorina and the still nonexistent abortion video

AP431444285949-540x346-1

Watching Carly Fiorina handle the controversy over her clearly misleading statements about Planned Parenthood, it becomes a lot easier to understand why her tenure as CEO at Hewlett-Packard ended so disastrously, with its stock price collapsed, 30,000 jobs gone and the H-P board in an uproar over Fiorina’s refusal to be honest about what was happening. The same character flaws and lack of judgment are reasserting themselves.

In this case, rather than admit and correct her mistake in the Planned Parenthood controversy, Fiorina has doubled down on it. Rather than accept reality, she has attempted through sheer denial to create her own.  Here she is last weekend being interviewed on Fox News by Chris Wallace, who notes that the footage that Fiorina repeatedly insists on describing in fact does not exist:

Wallace: Do you acknowledge what every fact-checker has found, that as horrific as that scene is, it was only described on the video by someone who claimed to have seen it? There is no actual footage of the incident that you just mentioned.

Fiorina: No, I don’t accept that at all, I’ve seen the footage. And I find it amazing, actually, that all these supposed fact-checkers in the mainstream media claim this doesn’t exist. They’re trying to attack the authenticity of the videotape.

Just to get this on the record, none of the facts below is in dispute. All of them are documented, often by the very people attempting to use the video to condemn Planned Parenthood:

1.) This is a screenshot of the image that Fiorina is claiming to describe, taken from a Fiorina campaign ad:

footage1

2.) That graphic video of a premature fetus struggling vainly for life was NOT obtained in the Planned Parenthood undercover operation, despite some attempts to imply otherwise. Even the Center for Medical Progress, which conducted the undercover video operation and which inserted the footage above into its own video, acknowledges that fact.

3.) In fact, the image above has no known association with Planned Parenthood whatsoever, as its original source, the pro-life Center for Bio-Ethical Reform, has publicly confirmed.

3.) Finally, specialists in the field of neo-natal development and obstetrics say the video segment probably has nothing to do with abortion either. Instead it documents the tragic birth of a fetus much too early for it to survive.

Greg Cunningham of the Center for Bio-Ethical Reform has tried to refute that conclusion, claiming it is indeed the product of abortion. He bases his argument on the fact that medical personnel in the video make no attempt to revive the struggling 17-week-old fetus. To him, that means they want it to die.

“It’s just nonsensical that any OB-GYN would not provide any neonatal intensive care,” he told TIME.

“Nonsensical”? People who actually know what they’re talking about have a very different take. According to neo-natal specialists, no OB-GYN would have attempted to save a fetus born that tragically premature because it would have no chance of life:

“… the chance of survival below that (22-week) gestation is simply so remote that application of aggressive neonatal resuscitation and intensive care would be not only futile, but cruel,” according to John Kattwinkel, a professor emeritus of pediatrics at the University of Virginia. (See also here.)

So here’s our situation: We have an emotionally powerful video segment of a dying fetus, a video that has no known association with Planned Parenthood, no known association with abortion and certainly no known association with tissue or organ harvesting. Yet through sheer stubborn insistence, Fiorina attempts to turn that video into convincing visual proof that Planned Parenthood is aborting late-term fetuses so their organs can be harvested while the fetuses are still alive. Even accepting the degraded quality of truth in modern politics, that’s just amazing.

Let’s review Fiorina’s debate statement one more time:

“Anyone who has watched this videotape —  I dare Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama to watch these tapes. Watch a fully formed fetus on the table, its heart beating, its legs kicking, while someone says ‘We have to keep it alive to harvest its brain.’ This is about the character of our nation.”

She is wrong about all of that, every little bit, including her charge that this is somehow about the character of our nation. At this point, it is about the character of a political candidate.

OK, the baby in the video isn't the same exact baby whose face was cut open to harvest the brain.  So what?  Planned Parenthood still cut through a baby's face to harvest the brain!  The fact that they harvest brains and other organs from fully-intact human beings was attested to on-camera by a multitude of Planned Parenthood and Stem Express managers.

And their only defense is to say, "No the baby in that video isn't the same one we killed; we cut open the face to get the brain of a DIFFERENT baby!"

Do you really think anybody buys that?

When a candidate has virtually no chance of getting the job, that doesn't necessarily mean that he or she is not worth listening to. Discussing the issues leading up to an election is an important part of the process, and more voices mean more issues get discussed (in theory, anyway).

However, when a person doubles down on a vicious, slanderous lie because she thinks "the base" wants her to -- instead of discussing issues that truly affect the women of this country -- then I'm done giving her time and space in my head.

SEEEEEE YA!

My approach as well. I've literally not spent a second of my time listening to anything Carly's had to say outside of her little crying jag at the last debate. I've been happy to read a pull-quote or two in columns like this.

Because she's obviously a phony, and the people who support her still are either self-delusional or simply idiots.

Good thing that you spent so much time coming to that determination!

You act like I'm unaware of her political activity pre-Sept. 2015.

See, I followed the 2010 Senate race. And I've spent some time reading her statements, even watching her ads, up to now.

And like GaBlue, I think it's safe to say I'm done, unless some compelling reason appears for me to start paying heed to her in the future.

Of course each country has its own set of dynamics but it all goes back to what we both have said, maybe in different ways & degrees, but the US foreign policy of my bad guy ok, your bad guy needs to go is not a winning hand and will never be a winning hand.

At best it brings short term benefit, if you can call it that, but long term problems such as we are seeing today.

And isn't it amazing how the US capitulated and allowed Russia back in the ME after 60 years?

The dude actually thought he was making a profound statement.  I hope that history teaching certificate he claims to have had doesn't deal with the ME over let's say the last 60 years or so.

Yeah, it was a revealing comment, but nothing that isn't matched step for step by Farnsworth or any of the other far rights here.

But then I remember, one of the things about being right wing is not having to say sorry. In their borderline paranoid world view, you don't even have to bother with a minimal grounding in the world of facts, you can simply let loose with emotion-based claims based on nothing but the most fleeting impressions.

If Washington actually cut down that cherry tree

Absolutely, and that's no accident. The media and Western governments have made a very concerted effort - during the Obama years anyway - to paint Russia as a backwards, anti-liberal place that's repressive for example against groups such as gays and is out of step with the movements towards gay rights.

Jesus dude. Your defense of Putin and Russia know no boundaries. I find THAT interesting.

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/russian-anti-gay-bill-passes-protesters-detained/

A bill that stigmatizes Russia's gay community and bans the distribution of information about homosexuality to children was overwhelmingly approved by the lower house of parliament Tuesday.

More than two dozen protesters were attacked by anti-gay activists and then detained by police, hours before the State Duma approved the Kremlin-backed legislation in a 436-0 vote.

They aren't just making all of that up comrade. That stuff is ACTUALLY happening in Russia.

That isn't Western propaganda or Obama or anything else. That is Right Wing homophobia running rampant in Russia.

Putin is an ex KGB guy. That is the tip of the iceberg. Many journalists have been killed

Have you no shame ?

As long as their political idols keep trashing Obama and blaming him for everything imaginable, all these other things will matter not at all to the gullible cons.

I know it will be difficult for Republicans to pick their candidate given that they have pretty much all pushed for bigger tax cuts for the wealthiest and decimation of help for those in most need and more bigger wars to kill off their constituency with.  Their candidates are going to have to come up with something new to differentiate themselves.

The dems?  Not so much.

erm, despite what our LT would bark if he saw this, there's far more of an ideological spectrum at work in the current Dem primary candidates than what you have on the GOP side.

Planned Parenthood has received federal funding since 1970, when President Richard Nixon signed into law the Family Planning Services and Population Research Act, amending the Public Health Service Act. Title X of that law provides funding for family planning services, including contraception and family planning information. The law had bipartisan support from liberals, who saw contraception access as increasing families' control over their lives, and conservatives who saw it as a way to keep people off welfare. Nixon described Title X funding as based on the premise that "no American woman should be denied access to family planning assistance because of her economic condition."

Well Albany that's what they said in Texas when they started shuttering Planned Parenthood offices -  "oh there are plenty of other organizations to pick up the slack." Except it hasn't worked out that way, and it's costing Texas taxpayers an additional $120 million a year.

Visual_Cortex

@DownInAlbany @breckenridge

Obamacare fixed that, remember?

Given the line of work you appear to be in, aren't you, of all people, a little embarrassed to be repeating this nonsense of a talking point?

To put it plainly--why on earth would you switch funding to a provider currently doing exactly what it's paid to do, efficiently, and squander those resources by trying to scramble up new providers in the same locations, all based on some phony tales being spread by right wing "news" outlets?

Why? If only for the utter waste of taxpayer dollars, if you were honest, I'd think you'd oppose such a thing.

Heard on the news this morning that we are still flying missions in Syria.  One thing I am sure of is that there will be a dust off between our guys and theirs.  The other thing I am sure of is our equipment and our pilots will win the day.  What Putin will do after that is anybody's guess, but if we bloody his nose bad enough, we might be able to politely ask him to leave...

Lenin - "hostility and aggression"

Still, that, in itself and by itself, does not mean that hostility and aggression is not warranted.
