Daddy Bush drops some truth

1310488432222.cached

In a new biography of President George H.W. Bush, the patriarch of the Bush family is harshly critical of Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld, central characters in his son’s failed administration.

Rumsfeld, as defense secretary, was arrogant and “served the president badly,” the elder Bush says. And Cheney, as vice president, was allowed far too much power and independence, using it to push the younger Bush into an overly aggressive response to the attacks of Sept. 11.

“(Cheney) had his own empire there and marched to his own drummer,” Bush 41 says, noting “his seeming knuckling under to the real hard-charging guys who want to fight about everything, use force to get our way in the Middle East.”

“The big mistake that was made was letting Cheney bring in kind of his own State Department,” Bush told his biographer. “I think they overdid that. But it’s not Cheney’s fault. It’s the president’s fault… The buck stops there.” ¹

I have long thought that would be history’s verdict as well. Cheney, you may recall, was originally named by Bush to head the process of finding him a running mate, a process that magically resulted in the selection of Cheney himself. From the beginning, it seems, the self-assured Cheney recognized the younger, callow and uncertain Bush as someone he could manipulate. So when the attacks of Sept. 11 came, it was Cheney, not Bush, who seized control, to the point of telling Bush not to come back to Washington. And it was Cheney’s paranoia and aggressiveness that drove the administration toward Baghdad.

Again, that in no way absolves Bush 43 of responsibility for the decision to invade Iraq — the worst foreign-policy decision in American history — and all that has since flowed from it. Asked to respond to the new book — “Destiny and Power: The American Odyssey of George Herbert Walker Bush,” by Jon Meacham — the younger Bush acknowledges that.

His father, the younger Bush now says, “would never say to me: ‘Hey, you need to rein in Cheney. He’s ruining your administration.’ It would be out of character for him to do that. And in any event, I disagree with his characterization of what was going on. I made the decisions. This was my philosophy.”

Tellingly, though, by the start of his second term, with events in Iraq growing more ominous by the day, the younger Bush came to his own decision that Cheney had to be reined in. He turned to other advisers, freezing out and frustrating Cheney, and his administration took on a less arrogant, more measured tone. In Cheney’s own autobiography, for example, the former vice president recounts a crucial meeting in 2007 in which Bush and his advisers were debating whether to attack a Syrian nuclear facility.

“I again made the case for U.S. military action against the reactor … But I was a lone voice,” Cheney writes. “After I finished, the president asked, ‘Does anyone here agree with the vice president?’ Not a single hand went up around the room.”

Too late. Too late for a lot of things, and a lot of people.

———-

¹The elder Bush does not go so far as to criticize the basic decision to invade Iraq, even though people close to him did so publicly at the time of the debate. “He’s my son, he did his best and I’m for him,” Bush 41 said. “It’s that simple an equation.”

BHO is the 14th President to serve in my lifetime, and by all measures he is the absolute worst. I will soon pass from the scene, so I won't live to see the whirlwind we reap from his naiveté and incompetence. Good luck to the rest of you, because I don't see the greatness we need in any of the current crop of presidential contenders for either party, and I won't even grace the current Congress with an insult, much less an encouraging word.

So sad......

@popgun  Just look back 8 years if you can still focus. You'll see the absolute worst. By a mile. History will clear it all up soon enough. It's just too bad Cheny got the chance to waste a second heart muscle.

Pelosi forces a vote with majority of Cons ( who went over to the dark side with her) to get a highway and transportation bill passed before all federal funds run out and after the Anarchists and tea heads torpedoed the bill, and it passed yesterday. Despite being against it initially, Ryan takes credit  for the passing of the Bill. He's good and learning fast. This is the 2012 lyin Ryan.

If any failure is seen in this "current group" it is from the opposition in Congress that has tried like Cheney to use this country and this government as its own private empire.  Obama is smarter than these people and very similar to the debate manipulation that just happened the Republicans seldom own what they caused and history will record O as one of the greatest and sadly a hijacked Bush as one of the worse, which has given no room to Jeb.

In 2000, the American people were bamboozled into the belief that Bush won the election. Then he let 9/11 occur.

On 9/8/02 Rice, Rumsfeld and Powell all went on separate TV talk shows with the same script: "don't let the smoking gun be a mushroom cloud," and Cheney cited as evidence an article based on false information that he had 'leaked' to Judith Miller.

They told us we'd be hailed as conquering heroes, the war would be over in weeks and would probably pay for itself with oil revenues.

Instead we've spent $3 Trillion not counting the cost of caring for the returning vets - and most not getting the care they need mainly because Congress won't support the VA.

And then just as they left office, due to insufficient Wall St. regulation, they blew up the economy, which of course they couldn't have done without the conditions created during the Clinton Admin.

Obama has taken an impossible situation and made the absolute worst of it, in many cases doubling down on the worst Bush practices.

Stating what ought to be done with the entire lot of them would be illegal.

@ccrider27 So you agree the Black Janitor in the white House had to clean up all the turds left behind by Cheney and Bush? He just did not clean up the turds fast enough for you.

ccrider27

@lvg @ccrider27 No actually he's a war criminal (having drone murdered 6 times more innocent civilians that Bush); he helped keep Wall Street in charge - appointing an AG who did not prosecute one single person for the mountain of fraud that threw millions of American families into the street; he protected Bush/Cheney from any investigation into their torture; he's pushing as hard as he can for TPP; he's appointed nothing but corporate supplicants to his administration; he's turned the Atlantic and the Gulf into what will soon be fossil fuel cesspools; instead of protecting whistleblowers as he promised he throws them in jail for decades; I could go on and on.

Stuff like that.

They're all scum.

You say Bush 43 was a failed administration. It was a lot better than the current group!

" the worst foreign-policy decision in American history"

Hardly, but then the left does write a lot of history. By the way, Congress voted on the invasion, twice. The U.N. passed resolution after resolution seeking verification of Iraq's intentions. The invasion of Iraq was not that difficult, but the occupation and expungement of radical elements was extremely difficult. After much blood and treasure was expended securing control, weakling Obama walked away and left it all to fall apart. You can paint that with whatever "they wouldn't let us stay brush you want to, but the conquerer doesn't ask the conquered for permission to stay. America lacked the will we displayed when we forever changed the the conquered and occupied Japan. Cultures die hard and die slowly. What Obama did when he pulled out made all of the aforementioned sacrifice wasted. Yes, the middle east is worse than it was, before we invaded Iraq, but it's not as simple as saying we shouldn't have invaded (and who knows how that would have developed?).

The only thing that matters though, is what we do next. We did invade. Obama did pull out. We are where we are. And, where we are is a very dangerous place. I for one will be very glad when BHO is no longer calling the shots.

Of course. So...am I to understand that you believe if another country attacks us, we are to turn the other cheek? Because if THAT teaching does NOT apply to governments (but only to individuals), then how does the golden rule apply?

Okay. Let me simplify it for you. Do you believe the US government should follow the teachings of Christ and/or the Bible?

In breaking news, the US House passed a long term transportation bill that now goes to the Senate for reconciliation and hopefully passage. The Republicans are actually doing something about jobs for the first time in 8 years! I wonder what kind of nonsense poison pill they attached to this bill.

We will see how it plays out.

This time in 2011 and going into 2012: Cain, Gingrich and Santorum along with Romney were all taking turns at the top of various polling numbers.

We know how it worked out for the first three

Heck..... The so-called high info voters in GA & SC voted for Gingrich.

Now if that isn't clown material I don't know what is......

I wouldn't be quick to rule out his first contention, since it now appears that the pyramids were made of cast, rather than chiseled, stone - which (if true) underscores how wrong "experts" can be. His second contention is more problematic, though Sagan and others have spoken about the possibility of aliens in human history:

Nick_Danger
Nick_Danger

@Penses @Nick_Danger IIRC, the earliest pyramids were certainly made of stone, as the quarries are known, and construction techniques, including pulling stones from quarries on sledges, are depicted.  Later pyramids may have been contructed using other techniques.

I am aware of evidence of pyramids being constructed as royal tombs - is there any evidence of pyramids being constructed primarily as granaries?

Understood and agree to an extent but I'm saying that with a birther at or near the top I doubt Carson's recent comments will be a deal breaker for many of his current supporters.  Maybe down the road along with some other things it will come into play...... but I doubt those comments in themselves will do it.

With that said I'm going on record that Carson will not win the nomination.
