GOP blew its chance to put immigration issue behind it

One of the animating issues of the 2016 campaign — at least on the Republican side — has been illegal immigration. The conservative narrative tells us that President Obama has thrown open the borders, abandoned enforcement and allowed the influx of raping, looting hordes.

Then there’s reality.

According to the Pew Research Center, the number of Mexican nationals living in this country has dropped significantly since 2009. In fact, between 2009 and 2014, the number of people who have left the United States to return to Mexico has been larger than the number coming here from Mexico, both legally and illegally.

Overall, the number of Mexicans living in the United States illegally is down 1.2 million since its peak in 2007, and the number of those of all nationalities here illegally has dropped as well.

The economy has undoubtedly played a role in that decline, but tougher enforcement has had an impact as well. For example, we have doubled the size of the Border Patrol in the past decade, and it would have been doubled yet again under the failed Senate immigration-reform measure that has become such a central issue among Donald Trump, Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz.

In fact, let’s review what other changes would already be underway if in 2014, House Republicans had chosen to accept the Senate-passed bill instead of refusing to even give it a hearing:

  • More than 700 miles of additional fencing along the southwest border would now be under construction.
  • Adding up all the projects detailed specifically in the bill, another 85 border observation towers, 488 fixed 24-hour video surveillance systems, 232 mobile video surveillance systems, 4,595 ground and infrared sensors, and 820 handheld infrared and night-vision systems, plus thousands of other border-enforcement tools such as radiation sensors, license-plate readers, etc.,  would either be deployed by now or under construction.
  • Almost 50 additional helicopters, 30 boats, four drones and six VADER ground-radar systems “to detect and follow people traveling on foot, as well as moving land vehicles” would have been purchased and deployed along our southern border.
  • The secretary of Homeland Security would have been given the authority to waive any federal law, including the Endangered Species Act and other environmental laws, that might interfere with fence construction.
  • A $750 million upgrade of the E-verify system would now be underway, and once the upgrade was completed, employers would have been mandated to use the upgraded system to verify that a person is legally eligible for work. In addition, “fraud-resistant, tamper-resistant, wear-resistant, and identity-theft resistant Social Security cards” would already be well on their way to development and use.

But none of that has happened, because the bill also included a long and difficult path to legal status for long-term residents here illegally, the dreaded “amnesty. ” In most cases, the bill would not have allowed that legalization process to begin until after the doubling of the Border Patrol had been completed, the new E-Verify system was fully functional and mandatory, and all the steps mentioned above had been implemented.

That wasn’t good enough. Even though poll after poll has shown strong majority support for a path to legalization, that wasn’t good enough to get the bill even considered by the House, let alone passed into law. As then-Speaker John Boehner memorably described his colleagues’ reaction to the immigration issue:

That failure to act at the moment that it would have mattered continues to have consequences.

"You  know how for so long we have thought that the racist wing of the Democratic Party called the Dixiecrats, that were based in the South were dead and replaced by Republicans? The actions of Democratic officials like gov Jay Nixon, always thought there had to be something slimey about a Democrat named Nixon, and Bill McCulloch, the vile St. Louis DA who smirked as he gave cops the green light to keep murdering

young African-American males have proven that assumption wrong.

This  is where the "big tent" philosophy gets us, folks. How can we point the  finger at Republican racism with so much racism in our own party? We need to drive these people out. If this party has no standards and no limits on what the people we put up for office believe and how they conduct themselves, what's the point."

"So  far, national Democrats haven’t discouraged Southern conservative newcomers. Congressional campaign committee heads helped Childers and Cazayoux, just as they did Heath Shuler in 2006. They helped recruit Webb and promoted him over the more conventionally liberal Harris Miller. Chuck Schumer and Rahm Emanuel have even been willing to boost

pro-life and pro-gun Democrats north of the Mason Dixon line, including Bob Casey in Pennsylvania and both Brad Ellsworth and Joe Donnelly in Indiana. Jack Davis has even run as a Pat Buchanan Democrat against Republican Congressman Tom Reynolds in New York. It may not seem like much of an innovation to run culturally conservative candidates in culturally conservative areas, but it took years for the Democrats to decide that they liked being in the majority better than imposing litmus  tests."

"ICE Director Saldaña Admits Dramatic Decline in Criminal Alien Deportations

Testifying last week before a Senate Judiciary Committee  hearing focused on the Obama administration's lax interior enforcement policies, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Sarah Saldaña admitted a dramatic  decline in criminal alien deportations. ....Sessions  was not satisfied, noting that her agency's budget for deportation was increased from $2.6  billion in 2011 to $3.4 billion this year, and that the government even returned  part of that allotment. (Id.) Summing up the hearing, Sessions said the decline in  removals

"demonstrated the failure of our system, when the one area that  we were

promised was going to be aggressively pursued was criminal aliens, and

 that is plummeting also. So there's nothing really working effectively."

Obama’s Budget Would Stop Reimbursing Prisons For Holding (Convicted) Illegal Immigrants

Audits, fines drop for employers

"President Obama took office vowing to go after unscrupulous employers who hire illegal immigrants, but worksite audits have plunged over the last year and a half, according to a report released Tuesday by the Center for Immigration Studies, tumbling along with the rest of immigration enforcement."

The Left-Leaning LA Times posted an article that shows that the Obama administration, the Illegal Alien lobby, and the major media outlets have been in collusion to depict the "high" deportation numbers.  The exact opposite is true since the beginning of the current President's policy.  Interior deportation has and will be lower than 1973 rates.  This is leading towards more people overstaying their visas and currently, more Illegal Alien minors crossing the border.  Obama has just recently instructed border patrol to not turn back those Illegal Aliens on record as having entered illegally as priors, but to let them pass IF they don't have a major criminal record.  After the first Illegal Entry, it is a felony each time thereafter.

Even Obama in 2011, called the deportation numbers deceptive when talking to Hispanic voters.  President Obama said statistics that show his administration is on track to deport more illegal immigrants than the Bush administration are misleading.

“The statistics are a little deceptive,” he said Wednesday in an online discussion aimed at Hispanic voters."

"If you are a run-of-the-mill immigrant here illegally, your odds of getting deported are close to zero — it's just highly unlikely to happen," John Sandweg, until recently the acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement,0,545192,full.story#axzz2xkzioeHR

Immigration Reform 2015: Obama's Priority Enforcement Program Protects 87 Percent Of Undocumented Immigrants, Report Finds

"The refocus in law enforcement efforts has effectively protected 9.6 million of the United States’ estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants from deportation, the report found. In all, a full implementation of Obama’s changes would reduce annual deportations to approximately 25,000..."

"The federal government’s chief deportation agency has seen its success plummet under President Obama, and its chief, Sarah R. Saldana, will tell Congress on Tuesday that they’ve had trouble adapting to the changing face of illegal immigration and a lack of cooperation from both American cities and from foreign countries.

Ms. Saldana, director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), says in testimony prepared for the House Judiciary Committee that the dramatic drop in deportations is a reflection of a trickier set of circumstances and pressures from all sides.

She said she had to pull agents off their regular duties during last summer’s illegal immigrant surge at the border, which meant fewer people focusing on deporting the longtime illegal immigrants living in the interior of the U.S. And she said the lack of cooperation from states, counties and cities when agents ask them to hold an illegal immigrant for pickup has also hindered efforts."

Hillary has won the minority votes so the only challenge left for her is turn out the vote.

Jay lists all that would have already happened had the Senate amnesty bill become law. However, the results probably would have been similar to the 1986 amnesty bill: amnesty immediately and the enforcement part never happens. Also, Jay mentions enforcement steps that the law mandates must be made before amnesty takes place. Look at how portions of Obamacare have been ignored by the Obama administration as well as selective reinforcement on current immigration law (sanctuary cities, 1000's of children flooding across our border and getting to stay in the U.S, DACA, etc.) i.e. - there is no trust that a Democrat president would execute the amnesty bill as written.

The Moderates are winning in the Iran elections.

Wrong AGAIN, cons.

@St Simons he-ne-ha

"Iran can still surprise. Despite thousands of candidate disqualifications, tens ofmillions of Iranians flocked to the polls to vote in their 2016 elections. Turnout has surpassed 60 percent. Victory by candidates aligned with President Hassan Rouhani already exceeds expectations. Thus far, there have been no allegations of cheating. This begs the question: What just happened? Votes are still being counted, but the preliminary results highlight a few key points to bear in mind going forward...

But perhaps above all else, these elections reflect Iranian society's continued desire to bring about change through gradual evolution rather than radical upheaval. They are demanding pragmatic and democratic reform within the existing system. No one is calling for a revolution, and a diverse socioeconomic swath of Iranian society rejects foreign interference in its politics. Many Iranians inside Iran only need to watch satellite television broadcast out of Los Angeles to be reminded that their most viable vehicle for change remains indigenous. Showing up and voting sent a powerful message to the outside world that Iranian problems require Iranian solutions."

It's a shame they can't even comprehend, much less appreciate how visionary our president  is.

As I've said here many times, the Persians are a very sophisticated people who are being embarrassed by those who govern them (sound familiar?).  We should extend support to the Persian people and let them bring their country around. They were on that path when the CIA and M6 removed their democratically elected president because he had promised to nationalize the oilfields and they replaced him with the Shah and SAVAK.

That was one of the most awful things my country has ever done that I know of. Screw the fundamentalist  clergy in Iran but I support the people. I am uplifted by news of their successes in today's election.

Oops, forgot to attribute the quoted stuff to HuffPo...

The New York Times is sitting on an audio recording that some of its staff believes could deal a serious blow to Donald Trump who, in an off-the-record meeting with the newspaper, called into question whether he would stand by his own immigration views.///////

David Duke. Benito Mussolini. The killers of Tiananmen Square. These are the figures about whom Trump is ambivalent to admiring. No intellectually honest person can liken this kind of thinking to the GOP or conservative movement more broadly. This is, in terms of American politics, a unique kind of appeal that, as in other ways, is well out of step with mainstream Republicans and conservatives. It should absolutely be rejected.

(Kyle, today.)

@Visual_Cortex if is out of step then why is Trump not rejected?

It will be a steady drip of dirt on trump in the general.

Drip, drip, drip starting with his tax returns.

Nate Silver thinks it is the end of the gop party.

Hope so, we don't need this type of party holding America back.

trump's kkk response is disqualifying says the gop.

His voters disagree and the reason they are voting for him.

The gop are in a tough spot.

@td1234 Who cares? You would never vote for any Republican and that is baked into the calculation.

It's not me you have to worry about, Reagan voters yes.

How Ronald Reagan Responded to Being Endorsed by the KKK is a Lesson for All Republicans

”Those of us in public life can only resent the use of our names by those who seek political recognition for the repugnant doctrines of hate they espouse.  ”The politics of racial hatred and religious bigotry practiced by the KKK and others have no place in this country, and are destructive of the values for which America has always stood.”

@StraightNoChaser @td1234 ”The politics of racial hatred and religious bigotry practiced by the KKK and others have no place in this country, and are destructive of the values for which America has always stood.”

~~~Ronald Reagan 1984
That is leadership.
A 2011 Virginia Journal of Social Policy and the Law study conducted by Jacqueline Stevens, a professor of political science at Northwestern University, found that “recent data suggests that in 2010 well over 4,000 U.S. citizens were detained or deported as aliens, raising the total since 2003 to more than 20,000.”
The truly horrifying facts of a broken immigration policy that RWers want to make worse.
Plenty of dirt on trump for the general so save it for the general.
The gop deserves a reckoning.
That time is here.
@td1234 Next election cycle what will it be when Trump screws this one up royally for republicans? Bubble yum taste better than bazooka gum.  Seriously td every election cycle republicans pull out some losing cause in an attempt to win the WH.  My guess is that since overturning Roe -v Wade for the last 40 something years has been a total failure the new losing theme is going to be immigration.
He wins the nomination and then they figure out he is a non starter in the general.
gop reps up for reelection are screwed.
Beats them screwing the people for a change. Karma.
Every now and then you can find a little spot of truth out here on the internets...
I feel the need to drop a little truth on y'all. So buckle up...I'm about to be politically incorrect.
We don't need to take America back. No one stole it. It's right're sitting in it. Chillax.
Mexico isn't going to pay for the wall and we're not going to deport millions of people and break up families. If you think either one is a good idea, you're not smart and probably not a person I want to hang out with.
We don't live in a democracy. Technically we are a Federal Republic. But in reality we are ruled by an oligarchy. If you don't know what that is, look it up. Reading will do you good. You probably need to do more of it.
FoxNews, CNN, and MSNBC have an agenda and are not "fair and balanced" or in any way unbiased. I'll more. Read newspapers (even online ones). Read lots of opinions and sources and then (stay with me here), THINK! Form your own opinion based on as many facts as your can brain can tolerate.
Speaking of facts...there actually is a difference between facts, opinions, and propaganda. You should learn the difference. (Another opportunity to show off your mad reading skills.)
Science is real. We know things because of science. Don't be afraid of it. You have an iPhone and Facebook because of science. It's your friend.
Global warming or "climate change" as the cool kids call it IS REAL. Anyone who tells you it's not real is not a smart person and probably should not be dressing themselves or caring for children.
Racism exists. And you are probably a little racist and should work on that. Seriously.
American Christians are not under attack. We are not being persecuted. We wield so much power in this country that politicians pretend to be Christian just so we will vote for them. No one is trying to take your bible away from you. The gay people are not destroying our families—we don't need any help from them, thank you. We do a fine job of that by ourselves. So stop saying we are persecuted. You sound stupid.
Poor people need help. If you're not helping them but complaining about how the government helps them with your money you are not a nice person.
Be nice to the people who teach your children. Don't send them nasty emails or yell at them. Their job is 10,000 times harder than your stupid job. You are not a professional educator so just shut your mouth and be thankful someone is willing to teach your offspring.
You don't know what Common Core is. You think you do, but you don't unless you're a teacher. So stop complaining about math problem memes on Facebook. You can't do the math anyway.
ISIS is not an existential threat to the United States. We do not need to rebuild our military. Our military is the strongest, scariest, most badass killing machine the world has ever seen. So stop being afraid and stop letting politicians and pundits scare you.
Guns do in fact kill people. That's what they are designed to do. If you feel you need a gun to protect yourself in America, you are probably living in the wrong neighborhood and should move before you go out and buy a gun. There are like a billion places to live where you won't need a gun, or even need to lock your front door.
If you do own a gun, then make sure you know how to use it really, really, really well. Seriously...get some training because you still don't know how to record stuff with your DVR. Go to the gun range and shoot the thing a lot. Learn how to clean it properly and be able to disassemble it and reassemble it with your eyes closed. It's a freaking gun and it deserves that level of care, proficiency and respect. And for God's sake, keep it locked up and away from your kids.
If you are even a little bit crazy, sad, or pissed shouldn't have a gun. And the Founding Fathers would totally agree with me.
Stop being suspicious of American Muslims. I guarantee the guy sitting next to you in the cubicle at work is probably more of a threat to you than any Muslim. He has to listen to your uninformed ranting day after day and has probably already imagined very colorful and creative ways to end you.
Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, and all the rest are ENTERTAINERS! Stop getting your opinions from them. (Here's where that reading thing can really be an advantage.)
Stop sharing Facebook memes that tell me to share or else Jesus won't bless me with a laundry basket full of cash. That's not how prayer works. And I don't want money delivered (even from God) in a laundry basket. Nobody ever washes those things out and they just keep putting nasty dirty clothes in them. Yuck!
We are the United States of America and we can afford to house every homeless veteran, feed every child, and take in every refugee and still have money left over for Starbucks and a bucket of KFC.
Unless you can trace your family line back to someone who made deerskin pants look stylish and could field dress a buffalo, you are a descendent of an immigrant. Please stop saying that immigrants are ruining our country. Such comments are like a giant verbal burrito stuffed with historical ignorance, latent racism, and xenophobia all wrapped in a fascist tortilla.
That's all for now. I feel better.
LaMonte M. Fowler
We don't live in a democracy. Technically we are a Federal Republic
