GOP convention goers will now be sitting ducks

Gun-free-zone-AP-725x375

I worry about what may happen at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland in July.

I worry for a lot of reasons. Donald Trump is one; Ted Cruz is another. But I worry as well because thanks to the Secret Service, the Quicken Loans Arena where the convention will be held is going to be a gun-free zone — no private firearms allowed. As a petition filed at Change.org points out, that makes the 50,000 delegates, media personnel, workers, volunteers and other attendees deeply vulnerable to attack.

The anonymous author of the petition describes the stakes well (emphasis original):

“This is a direct affront to the Second Amendment and puts all attendees at risk. As the National Rifle Association has made clear, “gun-free zones” such as the Quicken Loans Arena are “the worst and most dangerous of all lies.” The NRA, our leading defender of gun rights, has also correctly pointed out that “gun free zones… tell every insane killer in America… (the) safest place to inflict maximum mayhem with minimum risk.”

Cleveland, Ohio is consistently ranked as one of the top ten most dangerous cities in America. By forcing attendees to leave their firearms at home, the RNC and Quicken Loans Arena are putting tens of thousands of people at risk both inside and outside of the convention site.

This doesn’t even begin to factor in the possibility of an ISIS terrorist attack on the arena during the convention. Without the right to protect themselves, those at the Quicken Loans Arena will be sitting ducks, utterly helpless against evil-doers, criminals or others who wish to threaten the American way of life.”

The petition goes on to quote the remaining GOP presidential candidates about the terrible dangers created by gun-free zones, or as Trump describes such areas, “bait.”  As Ted Cruz warns, “if you’re a lunatic, ain’t nothing better then having a bunch of targets you know that are going to be unarmed.” That’s important, because there’s every reason to believe that lunatics will be in attendance at that event.

So as of Tuesday morning, more than 50,000 concerned, patriotic Americans had signed the petition in favor of overturning the Quicken Loans policy and allowing loaded firearms into the convention area. They clearly believe that if something goes down in Cleveland — for example, if riots break out on the convention floor, as Trump has suggested — it would be downright cruel to deny convention attendees their constitutional right to self-defense.

Nonetheless, that is what the Secret Service has done.  In direct contradiction to the Second Amendment, they have decreed that only the government will be allowed to have guns at the convention, and that private citizens who attempt to exercise their rights by bringing firearms into the facility will be arrested.  Even Trump himself — a concealed-weapons permit holder — would be denied the right to a weapon, and if a mild-mannered, even-tempered man like that can be denied a weapon, how can we possibly make this country great again?

Now, I’m no Alex Jones or Glenn Beck, with their uncanny ability to detect conspiracies that the less-prescient of us can’t see, but doesn’t that start your spidey-sense a-tingling? Think of it this way: If you were Barack Hussein Obama, and if you wanted to overthrow the Constitution and name yourself dictator as your first major step toward imposing Sharia law, what better way to begin the coup than to lure thousands of the nation’s top conservatives to gather in one place, then make sure that they are disarmed so they could be safely rounded up by federal “jackbooted thugs”?

I’m not saying that’s what he’s planning, necessarily. I’m just asking the question ….

Besides, if guns are a necessary safety enhancement on college campuses, as Georgia Republicans insist, then surely the sober-minded, rational and mature Americans who will go to Cleveland to choose between Trump and Cruz deserve that same degree of safety.

Right?

They only want guns in your church, your kids' schools and pointed at minorities so cops can target practice on the unarmed. They don't want them in their legislatures, capitol buildings or convention halls. First rule of repugs is do as I say, not as I do.

How do you even get out of bed in the morning????

Maybe as a compromise they could all be allowed to bring Tasers. Middle 'o the night, 20th deadlocked ballot, tempers flaring - it could make for some highly entertaining TV viewing.

This happened quite a few years back, don't remember in which city.

The police had busted and hauled a large quantity of marijuana.  They took it to a remote place and lit it on fire to destroy it.  A few of them stayed in their car to watch it burn.  They were down wind from the burn.......

It can be done to Quicken Loan arena and place the burn near the air condition inlet.

@rimsky They better have truckloads of doritos or there could be rioting!

I would give real money to the New Black Panthers to walk around the Convention Center constitushunal-carryin, and you can split it with the guy who goes inside the hall with a pocket full of firecrackers.

That would stay on You Tube for a hundred years hahaha.

Has anyone seen a video showing the female reporters immediate reaction to the now infamous "arm grab"?

StraightNoChaser

@RaindroidWillBoy Well let me put it too you this way.  There are some women you can't grab and man handle and get away with it.  So the next time that you, Donald Trump or his campaign manager chose to do so know that your a$$ just might go to jail.  Let me put it to you another way.  He has hired two lawyers, not one, so the charge and the allegation must have lots of merit.

No. But she is caught on video reacting to it. They showed her on the tele the next night. And when I wasn't staring at the rest of her I did notice that it was a good sized bruise about 3 inches long. He clutched her and handled her pretty good to get that kind of a bruise.

@Doom Classical liberal @RaindroidWillBoy I know you posted before the evening news, but check out their video.  Not just reacted, but the overhead shot shows the event in it's entirety.  HE grabbed her. She was not touching anyone including the huuggee Donald.

There is no Constitutional right to carry guns anywhere you want and YES the Secret Service does have the right and responsibility to protect candidates, including banning guns.  This 2nd amendment stuff has gone too far.  But, to be fair, let everyone at the GOP convention arm himself.  Let's see what happens.  There might be justice done and an end to obstructionism.

If everyone wears body armor can they tote their guns?

Pleeeezzzee?

I was really hoping to have them all armed and Second Amendmenting all week long.

Or at least for the first 48 odd hours.

That'd be cool on a storm trooper Vader level.

@honested And a Sargent Shultz helmet to match the body armor.

If you had your face bashed on a bridge by cops would you really make up being spit on 40 years later?

Maybe Trump would.

Sooo has Donald Trump's jail bird been freed yet?  Damn shame first Donald Trump was being looked at for possible charges of inciting a riot and now his campaign manager is going to the chain gang.

@honested @StraightNoChaser Yes, he will.

The Donald is famously loyal, and throwing a woman to the ground is nowhere near grounds enough for him to disassociate himself from the thug.

Sure is funny them RWers whining about no videos of John Lewis being spat on (well there was that one.....) but of course when it comes to claims from Trump about "protestor violence" that causes his people to "react" with violence, no video proof to support Trump's claims and our RWers sure do swallow that.  LOL

What about plastic guns? Vials of paralytic agents? Poisons in aerosols form? They are all in danger! Grave grave danger!

That might actually provide the cons with reason to stop and think about the absurd postulates they cling to so desperately.

@NWGAL You got a good idea.  How about aerosol some LSD in the hall.

@NWGAL They should probably just go ahead and cancel the convention. It's just too dangerous to gather in a large group like that.

Got my post deleted by using a bad word.

From your own article dude...

A staffer for Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) told reporters that Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) had been spat on by a protestor. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), a hero of the civil rights movement, was called a ‘ni—er.’ And Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) was called a “f*gg*t,” as protestors shouted at him with deliberately lisp-y screams. Frank, approached in the halls after the president’s speech, shrugged off the incident.

It wasn't Rep. Lewis making the claims.  It was a staffer for Rep. Clyburn.

@Brosephus @td1234  TD's "evidence" to support Doom's contention that John Lewis was NOT yelled and spat at, and called n***er, is an article that has a 3rd party stating that he was?  Dang - that must be an amazing "deductive logic" class that is taught at KSU.

@td1234 Well they made up for it with President Obama.  I have never seen such a despicable display of racism in my life as I have seen with T baggers and their Obama signs.

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/03/29/the-american-anti-vaccine-mom-turned-isis-superstar.html

Before she was tweeting in support of ISIS, a Missouri mom was blogging about vaccines causing autism and “chemtrails” poisoning Americans.

Safya Yassin was arrested last month for threatening the lives of federal agents with pro-ISIS messages. But her complete online trail raises the question of whether she was a true believer in the Islamic State or just a lonely single mother who yearned for attention. Members of her family, for what it’s worth, think she’s anything but a Muslim fanatic.

“She believes in Jesus Christ as her personal savior,” one of Yassin’s cousins told The Daily Beast. “I gave her her first Bible, and she still has that.”

Chemtrails and vaccines?

An islamic christian terrorist?

A christian islamic terrorist?

This is one whack-a-doodle woman.

I sure am glad I'm not a conspiracy nut.

Just sayin'.
