Let’s think through the Great Transgender Freakout of 2016

Caitlyn Jenner (AP)

Let’s try to think through the Great Transgender Freakout of 2016, using an adult attitude and the sense that the good Lord gave us. And let’s start with two basic facts.

1.) Transgender and transsexual people exist. They walk among us and have done so forever, many times without drawing notice. U.S. military history dating back to the Revolutionary War documents the presence of women who dressed, passed and fought as male soldiers. It has also been a long-accepted and at times even sacred reality in many Native American cultures. In short, this is not a new phenomenon.

2.) Like the rest of us, transgender people have to use a bathroom sometimes.

With those two realities established, the question now under consideration is which restroom they should use when nature calls. You may not like to hear it or think about it, but the odds are strong that you have shared a public restroom with someone of the opposite biological sex many times already. They’ve been there all along, maybe right in the next stall, because that is the least disruptive, least dangerous and most natural choice for transgender people to make.

Let’s imagine two scenarios that are everyday experiences for transgender people. In Scenario A, a biological woman who identifies as a male, who dresses as a male, who has the body language, haircut and mannerisms of a male needs to use the restroom. He is not a sexual predator; like every other living creature on this planet, he simply has to relieve himself.

Which restroom should he use? Which choice is most potentially disruptive and dangerous? He can walk into the men’s room, walk into a stall and probably pass unnoticed. Or this person who is male by all outward appearances can walk instead into the women’s restroom, causing a panic. Is that the scene that we want to require, by law?

Now flip the situation. In Scenario B, our person in need of a bathroom is someone who was born male but who identifies as and dresses as a woman, with all the mannerisms of a woman. Let’s call her Caitlyn. Imagine Caitlyn walking into a men’s room. Will others be comfortable in her presence? More importantly, given the history of assault against gay, lesbian and transgender people, will that female-identifying person be safe?

The common counter-argument is that male sexual predators might dress as women to gain access to women’s restrooms. “We are hearing reports where this open-door policy has been implemented, that voyeurism and sexual exploitation have occurred,” Republican state senators wrote in a letter to Gov. Nathan Deal and Attorney General Sam Olens. “… Predators will seize the opportunity to pretend to be transgender in order to gain access to women’s locker rooms, bathrooms, and dorms.”

The problem with that fear-driven theory is that the danger that it describes already exists. Sexual predators already don’t care whether it’s against the law to sneak into bathrooms.  They don’t need a change in restroom policy to “allow” them to do what their personal demons already drive them to do.  The real question is whether a change in restroom policy will somehow exempt them from prosecution for their crimes, and in trying to think it through, I can see no logical basis or evidence for that far-fetched claim.

President Obama has made the right call regarding transsexuals' use of public bathrooms.

When I was an adolescent in the 1950s, the federal government had to intervene to correct another human rights' injustice in the South at that time - segregation by race of schools, and the Jim Crow South, in general.

George Washington was a Federalist who stated that the federal government would help to overcome the provincial prejudices of the population.  Thomas Jefferson was a Republican who believed that all are created equal.  Jefferson, also, wrote in his first inaugural address, "We are all federalists and we are all republicans."  Profound words from Washington, the visionary and healer, and from Jefferson, the healer and visionary.

Here are my visionary thoughts regarding why the transgender angst is unnecessary and of our own making, based on our presently limited perceptions of gender and sexuality just as previously we experienced limited, provincial perceptions related to race.  I hope my words will lift consciousness, rather than create anger.

As I recall, about 10 to 15 years ago in Atlanta a surgeon was performing a circumcision on a newborn boy. He butchered the surgery, or the surgical equipment was faulty. Bottom line: the boy was turned into a baby girl by creating a female sexual organ for the baby boy, turned baby girl. This is a true story, reported on WSB-TV, at that time.

As I recall that newly created girl never really felt like a girl in the years that followed. If people were either wiser, or more informed about biological phenomena, they could understand how one's gender identification does not simply depend upon the two obvious sexual organs.  Brain chemistry and DNA are also involved in gender identification that probably begins in utero. We must start to understand sexual phenomena beyond the very literal, mundane, and patently obvious.

As an evolved society, we should be more compassionate and less judgmental regarding variations of differences in gender identification and sexual orientation. Nature is nature beyond judgment, and every person is unique not only in sexuality but in every other way that contributes to our common humanity.

Finally, on public radio today, I heard of these words said by a transgender child to that child's mother, "This (bathroom transgender decision) is life changing to me.  Mother, I can now attend a public school."

Post Script:

Every person is unique.  Labeling generically can sometimes damage individuals.

At one time, in the field of psychiatry, homosexuals were labeled as mentally disturbed, across the board.  Fortunately, those with intellectual curiosity continue to seek answers that break through present consciousness.

Moreover, this issue is both a state issue and a federal issue.  That is why I mentioned the positions of both George Washington, who favored federal rights over states rights, and Thomas Jefferson, who was a proponent of strong states' rights, but who also stated, "We are all federalists and we are all republicans."

Surely, if those two enlightened Founding Fathers can acknowledge the complexity of the interaction between federal and state governments and work together to sustain our exceptional Union, we can be as enlightened today for the benefit of all of America's citizens. Human rights for all Americans are guaranteed in our U. S. Constitution, which remarkably still stands valid today, well over two hundred years after it was created.

Seriously??? OMG, who paid you to write this ignorant and one-sided article??? Your employer should DEMAND that you consider the facts about sex crimes. The only critical point made in your article is, "Sexual predators already don’t care whether it’s against the law to sneak into bathrooms." Let's think for a minute why sex crimes are committed in secret most of the time. What are you going to charge a pedophile with if he DOES enter a bathroom...?? Standing there? Until there is a process for weeding out predators, we MUST hold off on a nation-wide mandate.

Lets not forget those freaks with their camera phones in the checkout line catching glimpses up women's skirts without their knowledge. Let's not forget about stalkers who aren't charged with crimes until someone is actually physically assaulted. Do you understand what it takes to prosecute a peeper or a stalker? Shame on you.

Hell, let's not forget the rapists who aren't charged with crimes until they commit a crime. Let's castrate them NOW.

I think it is sad to realize that some people always think something bad and disgusting will happen, it tells you a lot about those kind of people who think that way, it actually tells me all I need to know about them.

What did these transgender people do before the left liberal idiots decided to change our culture, tradition, etc? The problem here is not which toilet. The problem in this country is the liberal left.

Katie Brady Pothier

No the problem is fear-mongering bigots who made an issue out of a non-issue and then gave every pervert with leanings towards the opposite sex (as opposed to those males who prefer little boys) to capitalize on it. (Or for people to harass people in an effort to make a statement). Transgender people have been using the bathrooms they identify with for years with no issue.

Robb Welch
Robb Welch

The really obvious answer is that they just used whichever bathroom most accurately matched their outward appearance and no one was ever the wiser.

So the guy has breast now. Does he still have a penis ? If yes, use the men's room. Not rocket science.

Okay so AFTER the operation she can join your elite poop station club? You ladies have the weirdest initiation parties.

Until this , is actually a woman he is not a female. A man shouldn't be around children or young girls until fully a woman. Weird ? Not hardly. What is weird is when some guy believes himself to be a woman and he is not. Or woman thinks she is a male until she really becomes one fully. Just thinking you are doesn't make you something. Just wanting to be something else isn't justifiable cause for a sex change operation either .

Robb Welch
Robb Welch

Even weirder than any of that is insisting that men shouldn't be around children or young girls. Good luck with that one.

Just use the bathroom according to what's between your legs and not what's on your mind.

How about we make a law and not let people attempt to play god. God made u a man? You're a man. God made you a woman? You're a woman. Disfiguring your body doesnt change that fact. And to add it looks horribly disgusting....

If this bill had anything to do with child safety, it would ban sex offenders from public bathrooms, not transgender individuals. And for anyone who supports 'their own bathrooms', i'm going to guess you also advocate for white bathrooms and black bathrooms as well. #Ignorance

Unsterblick Wikander

I think the question even bigger than that is why are there even registered sex offenders walking around free anyways?

They usually let you out once you've served your sentence.

Well I think mandatory life sentences for all sex offenders should be something worth discussing

My wife saw a man dressed as a man in the women's bathroom at a gas station.  Is that OK?  He wasn't even trying to "be a woman."

If they are post-op then they aren't transgender. This is just a person wearing different clothes.

But I'm really really curious why that qualifier even matters to anyone.

Because obviously you don't want perverts and pedophiles with a wig from Walmart going into women's restrooms.
