Trump, a man obsessed with self and wealth

RTSJ4HR-1024x635

In his speech today focusing on the economy, Donald Trump opens right off the bat with the following statistic:

“Right now, 92 million Americans are on the sidelines, outside the workforce, and not part of our economy. It’s a silent nation of jobless Americans.”

Clearly, the statistic is intended to portray a bleak picture of the American economy, with more than 90 million of us supposedly left on the sidelines, unable to participate. It’s offered as a counter to the generally good news about the economy, including a low unemployment rate, rising median incomes, falling poverty rate and other measures.

But is the number valid? If we take that statistic as a gauge of Trump’s overall honesty and integrity in discussing the state of the American workforce, what will we find?

We find this:

Do the math, and Trump’s “92 million Americans … outside the workforce, and not part of our economy” is actually somewhere around 16 million, accounting for double-counting in some of the categories.¹ And if you have to count 80-year-old retirees and 16-year-old high school kids as part of your “silent nation of jobless Americans,” those left out in the cold and unable to participate, then you expose your entire argument as fraudulent.

That’s how honest Trump is in these discussions. That’s how he plays his audience for fools and dupes.

The rest of the speech was smoke and mirrors as well. Among other things, it resurrects yet again the traditional Republican panacea for all problems economic, meaning of course tax cuts for the rich; once again, it does so without regard to its multi-trillion-dollar impact on the national debt, on top of current projections.

And while Trump has claimed that his plan will benefit taxpayers all across the economic spectrum, every third-party analysis yet conducted on his plan refutes that claim. It produces enormous savings for the rich and very little for everybody else, while also setting the financial stage for significant future cuts in Medicare, Social Security, etc. (See here for my earlier look at the details.)

Remember, this is the man who has made it standard practice to screw and cheat small business owners who do work for him. He has reneged on countless charitable pledges, preening in public as a generous person but consistently, repeatedly and almost without exception never actually coughing up the dough unless he is shamed into it. His entire life and bearing is that a man who worships self and wealth, and the notion of him as the salvation of America’s working class is every bit as valid as his “92 million” talking point.

—————————-
¹According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, its U-6 rate — “total unemployed, plus all marginally attached workers, plus total employed part time for economic reasons” — has fallen to 9.7 percent, down from 17 percent in early 2010 at the height of the recession.

That rate translates into 16 million Americans who want a job but can’t find one, who want a full-time job but can only find part-time work, or who want a job but are too discouraged to keep looking. You can argue that’s too high — ideally it would be zero — but it’s a far, far cry from 92 million.

People are loving Obama..

-

Some people love Obama, especially in liberal / Democratic Party circles, but I would not say he's a beloved figure, by any stretch.

@Donnie_Pinko Not interested in your obfuscation today. You know damn well that poll does not just include just Democrats.  Stop lying

In a 2008 interview on 60 minutes, when asked about Hillary's BC stated: "Obama's BC is legitimate, as far as I know".

@td1234 And?  Trump is the birther td, give it up. Donald Trump is a grown man and grown men can not get away with being a follower and not a leader.

An 'extremely credible source' has called my office and told me that @BarackObama's birth certificate is a fraud.

Td, the rejection of Trump's statement, IF he makes one, will have  nothing to do with Hillary and everything to do with Obama. The President has a 58% approval rating and he questioned President Obama's citizenship.

td1234
td1234

@StraightNoChaser 1: That is one poll that has Obama at 58% and should tell you something about the poll numbers on the race since most if not all other polls have Obama's approval between 48 to 52%.

2: Obama is a lame duck so folks really do not care about him any longer just like all the lame ducks before him.

StraightNoChaser

@td1234 @StraightNoChaser Anything over 50% is popular which is bad news for Trump when it comes to the birther issue.  More bad news for Trump is if he ends up being viewed as unqualified or unfit by a substantial enough percentage of Republican voters,  game over. In the latest poll 23% of Republicans view him as unfit to be President.

Another sign - if one were needed - that our elites really, really don't like what Colin Kaepernick is doing, not one bit.

Amazing how a simple gesture by a second string football quarterback could have such power to make so many uncomfortable.

The Uses of Patriotism

David Brooks

This column is directed at all the high school football players around the country who are pulling a Kaepernick — kneeling during their pregame national anthems to protest systemic racism. I’m going to try to persuade you that what you’re doing is extremely counterproductive.

Yes, your hostility to what he's doing is very apparent, and just as telling as that of elites like New York Times columnists.

What a bunch of bs....yeh please be kind when you protest..Brooks mus to have slept through the 60s

If these common rituals are insulted, other people won’t be motivated to right your injustices because they’ll be less likely to feel that you are part of their story

62% of Americans say that Trump is not qualified to be President, remember when  55 percent said Palin is not “qualified to step in as president.”? How did that work out?

Donnie_Pinko

@StraightNoChaser

62% of Americans say that Trump is not qualified to be President,

-

So Hillary ought to be easily up by 20 points and headed for a historic landslide, right?

StraightNoChaser
StraightNoChaser

@Donnie_Pinko @StraightNoChaser The 62% comes from the same polls, take it up with the pollsters. Remember when 65 percent said Dan Quayle was not “qualified to be president if something were to happen” to President George H.W. Bush.  How did that work out?

td1234
td1234

@StraightNoChaser Well what does these two statements tell you about how the American people actually vote?

StraightNoChaser
StraightNoChaser

@SFM_Scootter @StraightNoChaser @td1234 America disagreed with you and they elected the one that they viewed as most qualified.  Just the facts.

In late October of 2008, a Pew poll found that 56 percent of voters said Barack Obama, then a first-term Senator, was “well-qualified to be president.”

This whole birther thing matters to whom? Only the folks that will be voting for Hillary no matter what is said or done.

Oh most definitely.  I couldn't agree more.

What does it matter if Obama was born in Kenya? What difference does it make if Obama is a Muslim? Why would it matter if Obama is the anti-Christ?  Why would anyone care if Obama has led the country into a moral abyss from which it will never escape?  Would it make a difference to voters if Obama has led a war on Christians, and if his goal is to eradicate every fraudulent Christian right wing extremist tool from the face of the earth?

@DaltonbywayofBickley

Sharing one of MY childhood traumas.

Mine involved a backyard picnic with a friend, her new kitten, Rusty and backyard fences.

While enjoying a picnic with my friend and her new kitten in her backyard, Rusty came flying over the fence, snatched the kitten and never broke stride clearing the adjacent fence. It was AWFUL!

After THAT incident, I acquired and trained a cat that could survive Rusty and did. I named him HOBO. A huge longhair tomcat.

Visiting Rusty's owners, I noticed his face was pretty scratched up and he was markedly docile. He wouldn't even look at my cat. Would cross the street from my house when making his neighborhood rounds.

Whether Obama was born in the US, Kenya or on Mars is a moot point.  He has only 4 months left of his 8 years as President.  If you wanna remove him from office and put Joe Biden in as President go for it!

It has never been about where Obama was born but his skin color.

FIGMO2

@Caius

Or as my friend contends, his fresh and new approach. His only concern? Lack of experience but that's what made him fresh and new.

Donald Trump is DEFINITELY fresh in his delivery and new to politics.

Took a chance on one and is willing to take a chance on another.

The birther thing brings everything back to the beginning. It wraps Trump up in a bow that he made. The American people can now see very easily what he is in total. It's over.

The bar is so low for Donald Trump that he actually thinks he can get away with saying "Hillary stated it and made me do it" on the birther issue.

@StraightNoChaser And it will work for the only people that matters. The independents that will decide the election.

StraightNoChaser
StraightNoChaser

@td1234 @StraightNoChaser No it won't because independents expect more from a President than one that passes such a low bar test of simply making a prepared statement after deplorable birther behavior for years.

Funny how some will quickly deflect from Trump's own words when it comes to this issue

StraightNoChaser

@td1234 @StraightNoChaser He is a national disgrace.  Colin Powell never lied.  If you look within those polls that you are so proud of now, 62 percent of Americans say they don’t think Trump “is qualified to serve as president,” while only 36 percent say he is qualified.  He is disgusting to the majority of Americans and that includes independents.

@td1234

Whatevs. It would be extraordinarily easy for Trump to put this thing to bed. Simple mea culpa. "I was wrong. He was born here. End of story." But he keeps on digging. That's cool by me.

It's a bone he throws to a good many in his base

td1234

@Eye wonder And Trump will do it today on TV and before millions of people on TV, while at the same time able to take a few shots at Hillary, and put it out to the public that it was her that actually started the rumors instead of a small story in a newspaper. Trump is playing the media like a fiddle. LOL

Fly-On-The-Wall
Fly-On-The-Wall

@TBS Plus, he likes all the press he gets.  The more press he gets the less press Hillary gets or can get in.  That's the plan, to play the press so he controls the dialogue.

StraightNoChaser

@td1234 @Eye wonder It does not matter td, he's is the tried and true birther and there are tweets and stories to back that up. Trump has a 62% problem and a shiny new speech is not going to fix that.
