Trump shows us the temperament of a loser

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton smiles as Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump speaks during the presidential debate at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y., Monday, Sept. 26, 2016. (Rick T. Wilking/Pool via AP) ORG XMIT: NYDB527

“I have a much better temperament than she does, you know,” Donald Trump said last night, referring of course to Hillary Clinton.

The audience laughed at his assertion, which is rarely a good sign. But he continued.

“I think my strongest asset, maybe by far, is my temperament. I have a winning temperament. I know how to win. She does not know how to win.”

Based on the evidence that was presented to some 100 million Americans last night, Clinton does know how to win.  She does have the temperament. Based on that same evidence, Trump does not.

Winning at this level requires the willingness to prepare, to study, to do the work, to master the issues. Because if you are too lazy or unfocused or arrogant to spend the time to prepare for a debate, if you disrespect the office that you seek that much, then you’re likely to behave the same way when it comes time to do the work required of the presidency. So it’s better that voters know that about you, and now they do.

And if you lose your cool under pressure, if you can’t keep from turning angry and truculent in front a national audience that is already dubious about your ability to keep a rational head under pressure, then again, you’re likely to do the same when handed the enormous responsibilities of the Oval Office. If you act that way, if you let your emotions drive you to do very things that you know you should not do, then the temperament that you embrace as your strongest asset may instead be the trait that makes you most unfit.

When you attempt to prove that yes, you did publicly oppose the invasion of Iraq, despite all the evidence to the contrary, you really should have a better argument than a claim that you whispered something to that effect to your pal Sean Hannity back before the war, yet somehow neither he nor you happened to mention it to anybody at the time. You’re gonna want to do a little better than that.

When you are challenged on your strident support for birtherism, which continued long after Barack Obama’s birth certificate was made public, you really should be able to offer something other than nonsensical babbling that confirms rather than refutes the notion that you’re one tin-foil hat short of a loon.

When you’ve presented yourself to the country as a strong guy, as a tough guy, then it really shouldn’t be necessary to resurrect your feud with Rosie O’Donnell as evidence of your manliness. Yes, she starred in “A League of Their Own,” but Vladimir Putin doesn’t play in that league. Neither do Xi Jinping of China and Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the head of ISIS. They’re not going to be impressed that you dared to call an actress a fat pig, and I doubt they would care that “everyone would agree that she deserves it and nobody feels sorry for her,” as you once again asserted last night.

When you’ve spent this entire campaign attacking your opponents’ character, both in the GOP primaries as well as in the general election, when you’ve taken enormous delight in name-calling and the belittling of others, you also really shouldn’t whine about some of the “not nice” things that people are saying about you in return.

Whining kind of destroys that tough guy image that you try so very, very hard to project.

And finally, at the close of the night, there was this:

“I was going to say something extremely rough to Hillary, to her family, and I said to myself, I can’t do it. It’s inappropriate. It’s not nice.”

As much as you might think otherwise, you don’t get any points for charm, grace or restraint by talking like that or making threats like that. Quite the contrary. Because people know that people with a winner’s temperament — they don’t talk like that.

That’s the talk of a loser. And last night at least, that’s who Donald Trump was.

Results of the debate:  Trickle down doesnt work.  Just criticizing the USA doesnt work.  Saying USA sucks doesnt work.  Stiffing people who did good work for you doesnt work.  Thinking everyone should have nukes doesnt work.

Trump is an idiot.  He is a walking disaster.  Hillary will destroy him in next two debates, if he shows up.

Hilary clearly eviserated Trump- gutted him like the slimy, slithering catfish (political scavenger who Is a bottom feeder) he is. Just think about it, Have you EVER heard of ANYONE SEEKING THE OFFICE OF PRESIDENT, stoop so low as to bring up an argument he had with Rosie O'Donell- a politically active comedian and actress? She is not a candidate for president nor on stage debating you!! It shows that the man lacks any self control. Poor GOP! If this is the best you've got representing you, then you need to disassemble and form a new party- just start over! Pitiful!

And to those who say "Hillary has not created one job"! How the hell do you know whether she has or not?! Hilary needs to lead the charge to penalize companies that leave the US and manufacture abroad like all of the companies where Donald Trump - the supposed job creator- has his products manufactured!

@Pzamm All of the GOP who back Trump after the debate are Deplorable.

Jay- eloquently said! I am both speechless and dismayed that his supporters are so angry, misinformed and in need of a bully father figure that they would support such a bafoon. When he said in the debate that Hillary did not look presidential nor have the temperament to be president, I almost fell off the sofa laughing. Her retort was excellent. Does Donald Trump have any mirrors in his home?

Read the book by the Secret Service man to find out about HER temper. Fits..rudeness to the staff. Seems like the moderator in this debate was biased

Hillary has not created one single job, never met payroll or had to deal with government red tape that she didn't have a hand in creating.  It is time to NOT ELECT an ESTABLISHMENT POLITICIAN.

@Rockstar67 @Habrams01

At the very least Trump has used his family's money to run his empire Crooked or not, Clinton has used government Money (tax payers cash) to build the Clinton Brand  to raise cash (Wall street speaking fees) for her family.

@Habrams01 But its time to elect an unqualified crook, who milks the system using daddy's money all his life?

Have you gotten Hillary's media memo yet?

Buschleaguer

@OH:IO Damn Bucky,I only thought you posted on UGa sites 24/7.No doubt Mrs.Clinton has the media on her side, Matt Lauer is likely to be on an anchor desk doing local news in Bakersfield after his "unfair" treatment of Hils in the National security debate. I guess in Clinton speak it depends on what the meaning of 'Unfair" is?

Lester Holt was determined to keep his cushy anchor job, he was more than fair to Mrs. Clinton as moderator of the last debate. No questions about e-mails , Libya, the Clinton Foundation, or anything that might be considered "unfair" by the Clinton camp. On the other hand of course he was balanced with his fairness to the Donald, questions about his Tax returns, the Birther issue , misogyny , racism, xenophobia, etc.

Why waste our time with the debates ,BOOK has already made our minds up for us, The Donald is a LOSER, Yay, We All Win with Hillary! The Pom Pom waving media has never been more open about their partisanship for any candidate. Which is OK for BOOK ,he is an opinion writer not a Real Journalist.

@MicheleInGA It should sadden you more that Trump is the GOP nominee. Thats why few GOP politicians support him

How did Republican men become so foul, trolling women online, calling them disgusting names, thinking it's acceptable to call Clinton supporters "panty-sniffers?" How gross. I feel sorry for the women who gave birth to these monsters, and for the women who feel they have to live with them, as well as their sisters and daughters. The woman-hating model personified by Trump and his male supporters reveals the hellish darkness inside the minds of  Republican men today. They weren't always like this--many of them used to be gentlemen before hatred got the better of them.Their verbal expressions of their impoverished inner life and use of violent rhetoric makes them unloveable and grotesque to any woman who has a molecule of self-esteem. They deserve to be treated as pariahs.

@DecaturDramaQueen It seems you feel that you have the right to generalize like this; substitute "African American men," or "Asian men," or "Hispanic men" for "Republican men" in your statement above and you will see how ridiculously ignorant you sound ...

Unless either of the candidates totally melts down(although It appears BOOK as picked his loser) nothing said in these debates is going to move the dial significantly in either direction. The problem Clinton is having is maintaining control in the battleground states that President Obama Won in 2012. This could be another BusH/Gore in 2000 Clinton wins popular vote and loses the Electoral College vote.

"Hillary pantie sniffers, if Trump did so badly, why are the polls still showing a very tight race."

First, kill the panty sniffer line. Not appropriate here.

Second, the debate was just last night so no horse-race polls have been taken yet. That shouldn't be a difficult concept to grasp.

@JayBook @10Dawgs What are these two scientific polls you speak of BOOK? and what exactly makes them Scientific, the fact that they say Hillary won the debate.

JayBook

@10Dawgs NONE of the polls showed Trump winning.

Zero. The only two actual scientific, representative polls taken post-debate showed Clinton winning by substantial margins.

Speaking of mothers: IMO Trump has "Mommy" issues. You notice he never speaks about her. It's always about his father. Maybe it's because she shipped him off to military school because he was having issues at his local school. Maybe that explains his hatred and total disrespect for women. In his "mind" and I use the term loosely, women are only good for one thing. God help us all if this "man" comes anywhere near the Oval Office.

I mean, you don't really want the conservatives to be vanquished, do you?

Initial estimates from research firm Nielsen suggest more than 80 million Americans watched the debate at home, but that figure will rise significantly when other forms of viewing are counted.

http://www.bbc.com/news/election-us-2016-37486320

This could be a record for a Presidential debate.

JeffreyEav

if 62 percent of 80 million people thought Hillary won the debate that's 50 million votes. About what you need to win. Obviously 27 percent is smaller (like some folks hands).
