Opinion: Why things may get worse for President Trump

Source: Gallup

As you can see from the most recent Gallup numbers, Donald Trump’s job-approval numbers are in steep decline. Two months into his presidency, in the period traditionally known as a president’s honeymoon, he’s at 37 percent, lower than at any point in Barack Obama’s eight-year presidency.

For comparison’s sake, here’s how the last seven presidents ranked at the identical point in their tenure:

  • Jimmy Carter: 75 percent
  • Barack Obama 63 percent
  • Ronald Reagan: 60 percent
  • George W. Bush: 58 percent
  • George HW Bush: 56 percent
  • Bill Clinton: 53 percent
  • Donald Trump: 37 percent

That’s a stark difference, and as you might expect with somebody so obsessed with his image, Trump hasn’t taken it well. In fact, our president was apparently watching CNN as it reported these numbers this morning, because a few minutes after CNN aired its story, he reacted angrily via Twitter:

From that tweet, it’s unclear whether the president was touting Fox’s own Nielsen ratings or claiming that his own polling numbers were much higher at Fox. Either way, let’s take a look:

According to Fox, just 43 percent of registered voters approve of Trump’s job performance at this point in his presidency, a drop of five points since February. For comparison’s sake, a Fox News poll at a similar point in Obama’s first term gave him a job approval rating of 63 percent.

And here’s the most important part: I see no means by which these numbers can improve. Contrary to the hope of some, the assumption of presidential powers and responsibility has made no discernible difference in Trump’s operating style. The White House team that he has assembled has not demonstrated even a minimal degree of managerial competence. His treatment of U.S. allies has badly harmed our international standing. And once in office, the anti-elitist economic populism that Trump championed on the campaign trail has been replaced by an enthusiastic embrace of Wall Street and the economic elite, paired with budgetary and regulatory attacks on programs that attempt to protect the American people.

Look deeper into the Fox numbers, at voter reaction to the core issues of Trump’s presidency:

  • Immigration: 41 percent approval; 56 percent disapproval.
  • Russian-U.S. relations: 33 percent approval; 55 percent disapproval.
  • Health care: 35 percent approval; 55 percent disapproval.

According to Fox News , 66 percent of Americans want a congressional investigation into Russian efforts to meddle into the 2016 presidential election on behalf of Trump, which Trump has attempted to undercut at every opportunity.

Just 34 percent support the Republican health-care plan championed by Trump, while 55 percent oppose it. Forty percent oppose that plan strongly.

In addition, 50 percent of American voters now support “The 2010 health care law, also known as Obamacare,” compared to just 38 percent two years ago. To paraphrase Nancy Pelosi, apparently the American people have to see the long-promised Republican alternative before they can fully appreciate Obamacare.

I can't believe "progressives" are still trying to use polls as a talking point. Your polls have been found to not be accurate so often it's ridiculous to quote their results. Check out who's President for example.

80% of Republicans still support him. They are the only voters who matter to him, and even those he is willing to throw under the bus with regard to health care.

Nunes: "I can tell you that we don't have any evidence" of collusion between Trump officials and Russia. And we're conducting our own investigation.

So Comey was not at liberty to comment on if there was or was not any evidence on Trump-Russian collusion which agitated Nunes.

In just two days, Allen raised about $200,000 in her campaign to unseat the GOP congressman in 2018, moving from an unlikely opponent to a viable contender. And her coffers have continued to swell. As of Monday, nearly $500,000 had been donated to her Crowdpac fundraising page, with more than 13,000 individual donations.

Anyone who thinks all of the deplorables who voted for Trump would not do so again, this very minute, are smoking too much ganja. Of course he is going to go through a time of unpopularity, perhaps even worse than now.

Why? Because he is not a politician as usual. He is a bull in the china shop. He is a change agent, and people do not like change. He is a business man who is accustomed to accomplishing things and getting results. A guy who asks, "How do we know this will really work? Are we on schedule? Are we on Budget?" Alien and unheard of concepts for those who have been living high on the hog in the biggest boom town in America since the 60's, with an inexhaustible supply of tax payer money, or deficit spending -- and especially during the last 8 years. They feel threatened, and they should.

The lame stream criticizes and picks and pokes at him and every aspect of his life and his family. The whole Russian thing is a fantasy. How refreshing it would have been to hear someone from the Dem/Lib - Hillary campaign say something like - maybe should not have been doing all of that stuff we were doing. But no, it is and has always been about how it was leaked by the Russians to Wikileaks, who made it public -  because Trump told the Russians and Wikileaks to do that. What a crock. What a total fantasy.

Think about this for minute. If you are Putin, you want Trump to be president? Really? You don't want the most inept and weakest Secretary of State since WW II, actively helping to run America's foreign policy into the ground and helping a president who hated having to deal with foreign policy - and created an era in which America's allies and friends were badly - and our enemies were treated like friends. A president who actively worked to weaken our military and who made idiotic decisions like just walking out of Iraq after regaining control of it via  the surge? You are Putin and you don't want the person who is clearly ready to implement Obama's third term and his weak and destructive and ignorant  foreign and defense policies - but you want Trump - a known aggressive bully, fighter, antagonist?

I would agree with your assessment if it wasn't for the simple fact that Trump is an agitator to everyone EXCEPT Putin. He can talk crap about Merkel yet with Putin he's like "yeah but we are just as bad".

Also Trump is easily manipulated because he is very emotional and thin skinned

Comey - "there were efforts to penetrate organizations associated with the Republican party and there were not releases of material taken, hacked from any of those organizations."

Interesting. So does this means Republicans were hacked but for some reason that information wasn't release? So they why?

What do we get from the well known liars like TD

Well he did not prove it today!!!!!

That is what the investigation is for TD. They are looking at this very very closely. Maybe there is nothing to it. But we are going to have an investigation which means we will have a report at some point in the future. One that could be very damaging to Trump. Frankly he is mortally wounded now anyway.

@rimsky True statement. Just like many women manipulate the divorce courts by claiming abuse of either themselves or children.

@rimsky From the article you posted:

"But in a letter provided to NBC News on Monday by a person helping with the Gorsuch nomination process, another former student wrote to the committee to refute Sisk's claims.

"Although Judge Gorsuch did discuss some of the topics mentioned in the letter, he did not do so in the manner described," Will Hauptman wrote in the letter, which was sent on Sunday.

Hauptman wrote that Gorsuch often asked his students to consider the challenges they would face as new attorneys, including the tension between building a career and starting a family, especially for women.

"The seriousness with which the judge asked us to consider these realities reflected his desire to make us aware of them, not any animus against a career or group," he wrote. "

@BB1700 @rimsky That statement still makes him an AH.  If he didn't mean it he shouldn't have said it.

Ficklefan

@rimsky Any male or female manager who has been in business for any amount of time, managing departments or groups of employees (and if they are honest about it), can tell you that maternity leave policies and programs are regularly abused. You always get the call the day before the paid leave ends that "I have decided (a decision actually made months ago)" not to come back to work. This is just a fact of life, and smart companies actually plan for it.

And those who deny it are just part of the lame stream and the usual mob out to slander and defame the "deplorables" and promote the fantastical and mythical war on women, and also throw in, just out of habit, that their targets are probably misogynists, racists, homophobes, xenophobes, transgenderphobes, etc. etc. Same old usual BS.

This New McCarthyism (The lame stream, Hollywood, the Radical Liberal Indoctrination Centers fka colleges and universities - with their NO FREE SPEECH ZONES - are clearly deep into it) is getting to be all the rage among the Dem/Libs.

rimsky

@Ficklefan @rimsky I agree with the first paragraph.  But knowing that a SC justice saying it is not right.

And it is not women who do that.  An employee (male) of my friend's takes off extended period of time citing illness in the family while work piles on.  His grand mother or his mother have died several times within the last 7 years.

You get my point.  Men and women bothe games the system.

Pointing at only women just irked me.
